Club Nouveau Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sometimes in our lives we all have pain
We all have sorrow
But if we are wise
We know that there's always tomorrow

Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on

Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your needs
That you won't let show

You just call on me brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean on

Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on

You just call on me brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean on

If there is a load you have to bear
That you can't carry
I'm right up the road
I'll share your load

If you just call me (call me)
If you need a friend (call me) call me uh huh(call me) if you need a friend (call me)
If you ever need a friend (call me)
Call me (call me) call me (call me) call me

(Call me) call me (call me) if you need a friend
(Call me) call me (call me) call me (call me) call me (call me) call me (call me)

Overall Meaning

Club Nouveau's 1986 hit "Lean on Me" is a soulful rendition of the late Bill Withers' song of the same name. The song speaks to the importance of friendship, compassion, and empathy. It also acknowledges the fact that we all experience pain and sorrow in life, but we shouldn't lose hope because there's always tomorrow.

The song's opening lines, "Sometimes in our lives we all have pain, we all have sorrow, but if we are wise, we know that there's always tomorrow," set the tone for the whole song. It's a reminder that, no matter what we're going through, we shouldn't give up hope because there's always a chance that things will get better. The chorus, "Lean on me, when you're not strong, and I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on," reiterates the importance of friendship and support. It's a call to action, encouraging us to be there for our friends and loved ones, and to reach out for help when we need it.

Listen! This is it right here! When slow dancing was in. So many memories with this one.

@AManOfEarth

Slow Dancing is still in. But to create a floor stopping single dancer sequence to this took practice. All Nations, Hackney, London (Soul Floor 3) and I did it-and with a step pacer I wiped the floor next time with Tony! Toni! Tone!'s "It Never Rains In Southern California." As I started dancing I confidently used the entire centre line of the full floor and it quickly cleared with everyone as my audience. There was only me and my step pacer remaining and the DJ (a lovely guy with dreads and a limp) was calling my name all night afterwards. I used to get special requests after that and gave the guy new tracks I heard on the Jeff Young Friday Evening Soul and US Charts Countdown Show-when radio 1 was a station. Then Burt booted Jeff out and put in that fake Pete Tong as Burt thought there was no demand for soul and R&B! That was January 1991. What memories.
