1/ Cluster is a German musical group closely associated with krautrock whose output prefigures ambient music. Michael Waynick, who reviewed Cluster & Eno for Allmusic writes a description that applies to more than the one album: "...too emotionally rich to waste as mere background music, evoking feelings of hesitancy and regret that rescue the music from mere vapid prettiness."

Having previously collaborated in the use of electronic instruments and experimental technique, Dieter Moebius, Hans-Joachim Roedelius, and Conrad Schnitzler formed Kluster in 1970. This trio released three albums, Klopfzeichen, Zwei Osterei, and Eruption. When Schnitzler left the group, Roedelius and Moebius became Cluster, and worked extensively with producer/engineer Conny Plank until his death in 1987.

Cluster and Neu! founder Michael Rother recorded several albums under the name Harmonia, and as such were joined by Brian Eno for one album, Tracks & Traces (recorded 1976; released 1997; reissued as " Tracks And Traces" by Herbert Grönemeyers Grönland label in 2009). Eno separately worked with Cluster on the albums Cluster & Eno (1977) and After the Heat (1978).

2/ Cluster is French heavy rock (mix between rock, hard rock and heavy metal) band from France (near Paris). They relased their 1st LP, "Sociétarium", in 2007.

3/ Cluster is an Italian a cappella group founded in 2003 by five young musicians, who were studying at Niccolò Paganini Conservatory of Music in Genoa.
"Cement", Cluster's first album, was released in 2006 and got 3 CARA nomintaions (Contemporary Acappella Recording Award).
The band was brought to wider success after taking part to an italian tv show named "X factor", in 2008.

Its hard to put your finger on why this is so good. Part of it is the balance between experimentation and melody. I'm not normally a fan of much minimal music but the simplicity is beguiling here rather than irritating.

IMHO, along with Zuckerzeit on of the best electronic albums in Krautrock and the Berlin school. Made way back in the day when synchronising electronic instruments was a daunting task involving syncing keyboards and drum computers on a click track to a tape track only to find yourself with only 3 tracks to record, of that 4 track recorder. 8 track recorders weren't financially obtainable until the very late 70s and they'd still cost something like a new VW Golf GTI. Back to 4 tracks, if you wanted more parts this would involve bouncing all three tracks to another 4 track tape recorder onto 1 track to have another 3 tracks available and you'd better have the levels right on those 4 tracks of the 1st tape recorder because the levels of those first 3 tracks would be permanent. Sequencing hadn't been a mainstay back then and if you had the luck of owning an ARP 1603 sequencer you could only sequence one keyboard if you were lucky that it were to support the 1 Volt per octave scheme. And still, you'd need another tape recorder track to synchronise the sequencer. And if your tape was worn the sequencer would be rhythmically all over the place. And you'd better pray your synth and sequencer didn't have any grounding issues or the sync would be gone as well. That's why studios back then had a whole battery of tape recorders stacked onto each other. It remains the question whether the absence of beats on this album is due to this complexity or whether it was intended. I hope it's the second. That was the reality of electronic music in the year 1976. Probably most of this beauty was played live onto tape as it can be heard on the timing. But mind you, Moebius and Roedelius were virtuosos, if anyone would do this today they'd get disheartened right away and resort to Protools Beat Detective or midify anything they'd play. And then Moebius and Roedelius came up with this, breathtaking.

the "Wanderer" is a figure in Wagner's Ring of the Nibelungen, it is the god Wotan as he appears on earth. But the more generic "Wanderer" is a classic symbol of young, restless, travellers in 18th-19th century Germany, as in Schuberts Winterreise. Does anyone know here the inspiration/reference?

tubenshaft das schöne heutzutage ist ja, dass diese ganze Musik so leicht verfügbar ist. Damals in den 80ern als ich mich dafür zu interessieren begann, gab es vieles noch nicht mal als vinyl.

tubenshaft klar da hast du auf jeden fall recht. Ich mag vor allem die Sachen aus den 60ern, die haben damals die stücke sozusagen immer wieder anderst gespielt, mit viel Raum für Improvisationen. Später war es dann fast immer eins zu eins. Ich habe Pink Floyd nur einmal in den 90ern live erlebt und es war zwar toll aber dieses gewisse etwas der frühen Zeit fehlte leider.

please don´t say this, it´s a terrible, embarrassingly flat generalisation and it´s simply not true at all - the music and the times have changed, but soul still is essential in music, it´s expressed in different ways, as it was expressed differently in those days looking from the time before then - in those days the old people would say: it´s just noise, not even music - i often read comments like yours, some people even claim that "the kids of today" don´t have any talent - grrrrr, what an annoying crap - it´s like claiming that glenn miller was better than cluster - how would you measure???
yes, yes, yes i also know that in those good old days even the charts were better than the charts of today, plus, the girls were much much prettier, you just don´t see pretty girls like that nowadays a.s.o. a.s.o. a.s.o.

last year i talked to a 78-year-old guy from new york who also claimed, that there was no more good music and that he had encountered woodstock back in the day - i was curious and asked about this experience - so we changed to e-mail and chatted loosely since then, and i also sent him some of my own music (home recorded) - he was delighted and two or three weeks ago he told me, he found a small radio station, who play only new music, and that he likes most of it - - - imagine that, haha!
are you a musician? in case you´re interested, i could send you some of my stuf, i´d be glad to exchange some - i still have nothing on youtube, but i will have one day...
