Not long after forming, Coast took out top prize in the 2008 Eastern Bay Battle of the Bands, judged by Kora, and then Auckland's Rock to the Top competition in 2009. With these early achievements, it's not surprising that the young band's potential came to the attention of Loop's Mikee Tucker (TrinityRoots, The Black Seeds, Fly My Pretties), who quickly joined forces with them.
Encouraged by their success, and driven forward by their ties to each other as both bros and bandmates, Coast have developed a deep and complex sound, captured on their self-titled debut release Coast EP. 100% New Zealand Music

(5) Coast was a UK rock band named after the 1972 song "Coast to Coast" by Trapeze. Coast contained a singing bass player Peter "Biff" Byford, and guitarist Steve Quinn. In 1975, Coast was falling apart, and S.O.B.'s lead singer and guitarist Steve Furth left to go solo, so in November 1975 a new band was formed by S.O.B.'s Oliver, Dawson and Walker, and Coast's Byford and Quinn. Byford became the new lead singer. They adopted the name Son of a Bitch for its more aggressive tone, and they pushed toward a heavier sound.

Your Soul

You let me go just to watch me discern
Just because it feels the same, 'til the morning comes
Even roads fill the sun so cold
Out on the ocean, that wild dark sea
You're the shark that's been lurking beneath
Fear has gripped me, where can I go?
Your soul won't hide your face
Let me down for a second
Time, a look you can't replace
Give me a chance to rule the second
Just because it's all the same, just a higher grade
You're washing over the iron gates
Just because our songs are known, bodies all around
I see the earth in your eyes on the brow
Ten thousand trees lie in wait for the fall
It's far too easy to ignore the call
Still gripped with fear before your eyes
Get mad, stare into the dark of the night
Your soul won't hide your face
Let me down for a second
Time, a look you can't replace
Give me a chance to rule the second
Crowds of ghosts is all we trust
You frown and blush resolve we must
The crowds of ghosts is all we trust
You frown and blush resolve we must
Your soul won't hide your face
Let me down for a second
Time, a look you can't replace
Give me a chance to rule the second
The lyrics to Coast's song Your Soul explore the theme of fear and mistrust in a relationship. The opening lines of the song suggest that the singer's partner is unsure of their own voice and relies on external sources for their opinions and beliefs. The next two lines, "You let me go just to watch me discern / Just because it feels the same, 'til the morning comes" suggest that the partner is playing games with the singer and toying with their emotions. The line "Even roads fill the sun so cold" paints a picture of a tense and uncomfortable atmosphere, and suggests that there is a lack of warmth and affection in the relationship.
The chorus "Your soul won't hide your face / Let me down for a second / Time, a look you can't replace / Give me a chance to rule the second" expresses the singer's desire for their partner to be honest and transparent, to let their true self be seen, and to give them a chance to make things right. The second verse introduces the image of the shark lurking beneath the surface of the ocean, suggesting that the partner is dangerous and unpredictable. The line "Still gripped with fear before your eyes" reinforces the idea of fear and mistrust, and suggests that the singer feels trapped and powerless in the relationship. The final two lines of the song, "The crowds of ghosts is all we trust / You frown and blush resolve we must" suggest that the partner and speaker are surrounded by people who are not real or genuine, and that they must work together to find a solution to their problems.
