1) Coastal is the hybrid of several musicians who have played out for years in their respective bands, yet have never really made the music they wanted to. Jason Gough has been involved in shoegaze style bands for several years (Lumiere, The Mantarays, Azure) and it was through such bands that he met up with Josh Callaway (Just Lucy). As their music developed, they soon enlisted Jim Harker (Stigma, The Melody Tree) to take on drum duties and occasionally play second guitar. With the main structure in formation and a sound of their own emerging, the three felt the music needed an additional presence. Luisa Gough came on to play keyboards and sing backing vocals to complete Coastal's line-up.
2) Coastal are Aaron Hetherington and Jonathan Fletcher. Hailing from Leeds in the United Kingdom, the duo's journey has took them from a fronting Hardcore inspired metal band to now taking a leap into the 80s retrowave scene.
There first release 'Memories' was released in 2021, featuring favourites 'Kyoto' and 'Summer Eyes'. 'Heartbeats' - Coastal's second release was released in May 2023.

Ashes
Coastal Lyrics

The smoke rises to space
The astronauts are learning
To fly another way
You radiate my reason
Escape with me today
You amplify my vision
Away,
Away.
The astronauts are burning
The smoke rises to space
The astronauts are learning
To fly another way.
The lyrics to Coastal's song Ashes speak to a sense of destruction and rebirth, conveyed specifically through the metaphor of burning astronauts. The first two lines evoke the image of astronauts burning up upon re-entry into the earth's atmosphere, creating smoke that rises into space. However, the next two lines suggest that this burning and destruction is actually a process of learning and growth - the astronauts are "learning to fly another way." This creates a sense of hope amidst an initially bleak image, suggesting that even destruction can lead to new horizons.
Moving on to the second stanza, the lyrics become more personal, addressing a lover or partner. The lines "you radiate my reason / escape with me today" suggest that this person brings clarity and purpose to the singer's life, and that together they can transcend the difficulties of the world ("escape"). The image of "amplifying vision" and "floating away" suggests a kind of ecstatic union in which the couple transcend their individual selves and achieve a new level of understanding.
Overall, the lyrics to Ashes are poetic and evocative, creating vivid and memorable images that speak to both personal and universal themes of destruction, learning, and growth.
