1.Cobalt is a Progress… Read Full Bio ↴There are at least three Bands called Cobalt.
1.Cobalt is a Progressive Black Metal band from the USA. Ever since their inception in the late nineties, Colorado’s (sometimes controversial) Cobalt have slowly, and slyly, made a reputation within the underground Black Metal scene.
Their debut album (which followed their Hammerfight EP), aptly titled War Metal (released on Displeased Records) showed Cobalt’s creative prowess within the genre by offering a shape-shifting dose of brutality and rawness.
Cobalt's second album, Eater of Birds, is generally considered to represent an immense leap forward from the band's debut. Recorded at Flatline Audio and produced by Dave Otero (Cephalic Carnage) Eater of Birds embraces the band’s vicious take on chaotic brutal avant-garde black metal while substantially raising the ambition of the music. By incorporating the crushing monolithicism of Neurosis and Swans, and taking avant garde black metal to new unconventional brutality, amongst ritualistic shaman-like rhythms and pulsations, through its 70-plus-minute pillage, Eater of Birds is a unique journey through vast bizarre landscapes and ocean-like terrain. Eater of Birds also features a guest appearance by Jarboe of Swans fame on the tracks “Invincible Sun” and a moving appearance on “Androids, Automatons, and Nihilists”, her first official foray into extreme metal.
On March 17th 2009, Cobalt released their third album, "Gin". The album further expanded the band's audience and received critical acclaim.
Phil McSorley left the band in 2014. Charlie Fell now performs vocals for the band.
The band's fourth album, Slow Forever, was released in 2016. Arguably even more ambitious than the band's previous work, Slow Forever is a double album that runs for nearly eighty-four minutes in its CD edition.

Cobalt Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Mammoth crawls under the ice,
Too slow to be measured in time,
Suicide painted on his eyes.
I want animal skins,
I want a house made out of it,
How much I want to crawl back inside my mother,
I want a house made out of her.
How I want to wear the blood of my father.
All the way down into the hotel basements,
Stuffing her mouth with my fingers,
This is why we're in love,
This is what I needed to show you.
Hemingway save me,
Hemingway save me,
Hemingway save me,
Hemingway get me really fucked up.
Together we chose not to believe,
You are my strung out queen,
You're too sad to come with me,
Coat your Tongue with another lie about me.
Your brother betrays you.
Your friend kills you.
Your woman is dead.
The strong will inherit the earth.
I drink my,
I drink my GIN!
Gin!
Gin!
Gin!
Gin!
The lyrics of the song "Gin" by Cobalt are complex and layered, exploring themes of violence, familial relationships, and self-destruction. The song begins with a visceral image of blood in the air, setting a tone of brutality and aggression. The mention of the mammoth crawling under the ice creates a sense of prehistoric danger, and the reference to suicide in the animal's eyes adds a layer of sadness and despair. The lines "I want animal skins, I want a house made out of it" reveal a desire to possess and control, and the longing to crawl back inside the mother suggests a desire for safety and comfort. The desire to wear the blood of the father is a further indication of the violent and destructive impulses at the heart of the song.
The reference to hotel basements and stuffing someone's mouth with fingers are violent and sexual in nature, highlighting the dark and dangerous aspects of the relationship being explored. The repetition of "Hemingway save me" speaks to a desperation for escape, and the line "together we chose not to believe" suggests a rejection of reality and an embrace of fantasy. The references to betrayal, death, and the strong inheriting the earth all contribute to a sense of darkness and despair, and the repeated cries of "Gin" at the end of the song suggest a desire to numb the pain with alcohol.
