In March 1997, she released her major label debut single "Kauntodaun" and a full-length album followed shortly after. It wasn't until 1998 when she scored a big hit in Japan with "Tsuyoku Hakanai Monotachi" ("The Strong and Ephemeral"), selling more than 250,000 copies of that single.
Cocco went on to record three more albums, "Kumuiuta" in 1998, "Rapunzel" in 2000, and "Sangurōzu" in 2001. Before the release of "Sangurōzu", Cocco announced she was retiring from the music business. Later that year, her label released a career retrospective, Best + Ura Best + Mihappyōkyokushū, which contained her singles, some b-sides and five unreleased tracks.
Her retirement didn't last too long. In 2002, she published her first art book, "Minami no Shima no Hoshi no Suna". In August 2003, she organized a benefit concert to raise awareness about cleaning up beaches in Okinawa. A DVD documentary titled "Heaven's Hell followed in December".
2004 saw her appearance on the Yutaka Ozaki cover album "BLUE" and the publication of her second book, "Minami no Shima no Koi no Uta", which was accompanied by a limited edition single, "Garnet / Celeste Blue". In 2005, Cocco collaborated with photographer/singer nanaco on CD/book combination titled "The Bird".
In late 2004, Cocco teamed up with Shigeru Kishida of the Japanese rock group Quruli (くるり) to re-record "Sing a Song" for Tower Records' 25th Anniversary in Japan. The sessions inspired the formation of Singer Songer, a band featuring Cocco, Kishida, Quruli's bassist Masashi Sato, Cornelius' support keyboardist Hirohisa Horie and former Feed's drummer Dai Taro.
Singer Songer made its live debut as a special guest at Quruli's year-end concert in December 2004, and in May 2005, the band released a single, "Shoka Rinrin". An album, "Barairo Pop" was released in June 2005. It contains a selection of country-flavored tracks that are much happier than Cocco's previous works.
On July 7, 2007, Cocco performed at the Japanese leg of Live Earth at the Makuhari Messe, Tokyo.
Blue Bird

move in a spiral
around again
and reach you
go round and round
a bird is singing
that calls for blue wind
I hold it, which I haven't seen
but someday I will
surely... with my dirty hands
lead me
when the moment
of my end arrives
I wish
these eyes will open wide
please see the end of me
please see the end of me
please see and kill me,
please ...
add ground to the earth
fill it up with the ocean
where do we sprinkle
our own bones?
and where are we going?
there are days that
I want to protect
though there are
some oaths about things,
I can't keep my dreams...
now... past... and you
If you let me... If I lose
there is no deceit
and I wish I can exist
surely I'll take you...
I'll take you...
lead me
when the moment
of my end arrives
I wish
these eyes will open wide
please see the end of me
please see the end of me
please see and kiss me,
please ...
burning asphalt stings
my bare feet
I don't care to jump out of here
but I want to see you
I want to see you
I want to see you
tomorrow again
lead me
when the moment of my end comes
I wish
these eyes will open wide
I believe it
someday someday... surely
I'll reach you
I can't heal everything
I can't heal everything
but I'll take them and you ...
The lyrics to Cocco's song "Blue Bird" can be interpreted as a reflection on the cyclical nature of life and death. The singer seems to be searching for something, represented by the "blue wind" and the "softly... new sin" that she seeks to hold. She acknowledges that she is flawed ("with my dirty hands") and longs for someone to guide her through the moment of her death, hoping that her eyes will open wide to see the end of her journey.
The lyrics also touch upon themes of loss and the impermanence of life. The singer considers where she will be buried and wonders where she is ultimately headed. Despite her desire to protect certain things and hold onto certain dreams, she knows that she cannot keep everything. The burning asphalt that stings her feet suggests a feeling of discomfort or struggle, but ultimately she expresses a desire to keep moving forward and see her beloved "tomorrow again."
In summary, "Blue Bird" is a contemplative song that explores the contradictions and uncertainties of life, death, and the search for meaning.
