Sinking like a sunset
Cochrane Tom Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She's thinking about the prince and Cinderella
The outlaws the hustlers and the heroes
They never seem to fall
It doesn't matter it doesn't matter what
The outcome of the story is
Because in real life I try to tell her
It's not like that at all
Oh won't you please just hold out now
Cause there are some things I'd like you to forget
When you world is sinking like a sunset

Tales of Don Juan they're very poetic babe
But out on the streets out there
The true verse of life is written
You know it's really a shame
When you've got to let go
Of all the things you love
Like a fighter he really bleeds
When he must hang up his gloves

No I am not a rock
And I can feel it now
But for a moment
I'd like to forget
That my heart is
Sinking like a sunset
Sinking like a sunset

Everybody has a story
Some are tragic some find glory
But it feels more real when you're here
Right next to me

You can walk too far out on that ledge
And you might lose your mind
You know I need you now
You're an angel that keeps me in line
The old sergeant has broken down
He's grown senile
He shouts "kill the bastards!" in the night
Cause he's all out of time

Don't hold out let's make love right now
Cause there's some things I'd like to forget
When our hearts are sinkin' like a sunset
Won't you hold me now
And make things right
Cause when you're with me here
The sun comes out at night
Making me forget
We're sinking like a sunset

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Sinking like a sunset" by Tom Cochrane explore the theme of romanticizing different stories and heroes to escape the reality of life. The girl being referred to in the song thinks about the stories of prince and Cinderella, outlaws, hustlers, and heroes, who seem to never fall. However, the singer knows that it's not actually true in real life. He urges her to forget some things, hold out, and accept the reality when the world is sinking like a sunset.

In the second stanza, he talks about how the tales of Don Juan are poetic but life is not like that. He laments the fact that sometimes we have to let go of things we love, and it's like a fighter hanging up his gloves. He refuses to be a rock and wants to forget for a moment that his heart is sinking like a sunset.

The third stanza shifts the focus to the universal theme of everyone having a story. Some are tragic and some find glory, but it feels more real when you're next to the person you love. The lyrics then take on a darker tone, discussing the potential consequences of walking too far out on a ledge and losing your mind. The singer needs the girl now as she's the one keeping him sane. The old sergeant shouting "kill the bastards" in the night is an example of someone who's all out of time.

Overall, the song showcases how life can be difficult and sometimes you need to accept the harsh reality instead of always dreaming of different heroes and their stories.

Line by Line Meaning

She's thinking about the prince and Cinderella
She's caught up in the idea of a fairytale romance, where everything is perfect and falls into place like it does in the story of Cinderella.

The outlaws the hustlers and the heroes They never seem to fall
People who are perceived as outlaws, hustlers, and heroes often seem invincible and unaffected by failures, but that's only an illusion.

It doesn't matter it doesn't matter what The outcome of the story is Because in real life I try to tell her It's not like that at all
It's pointless to fixate on the happy endings in stories, because in real life, things don't always end the way we want them to, and it's important to accept that.

Oh won't you please just hold out now Cause there are some things I'd like you to forget When you world is sinking like a sunset
Please don't give up now, because I want you to forget the troubles that are weighing on you and remember the good times we've had even when things seem hopeless.

Tales of Don Juan they're very poetic babe But out on the streets out there The true verse of life is written You know it's really a shame When you've got to let go Of all the things you love Like a fighter he really bleeds When he must hang up his gloves
Stories of love and romance might sound beautiful and perfect, but real life is not always like that, and it can be hard to let go of what you once loved, just like a fighter who has to retire from the game they love.

No I am not a rock And I can feel it now But for a moment I'd like to forget That my heart is Sinking like a sunset
I want to admit that I'm not as strong and unfeeling as I seem, but sometimes I wish I could forget that my heart is heavy and sinking.

Everybody has a story Some are tragic some find glory But it feels more real when you're here Right next to me
Everyone has their own unique story full of ups and downs, and I feel more connected to reality and grounded when we are together.

You can walk too far out on that ledge And you might lose your mind You know I need you now You're an angel that keeps me in line
Sometimes it's easy to lose oneself in dangerous pursuits and risk losing everything, which is why I need you to help steer me in the right direction and keep me on track.

The old sergeant has broken down He's grown senile He shouts "kill the bastards!" in the night Cause he's all out of time
Even someone who was once strong and capable can grow old, lose their sense of sanity, and become consumed by anger and bitterness, because they feel like they are running out of time.

Don't hold out let's make love right now Cause there's some things I'd like to forget When our hearts are sinkin' like a sunset Won't you hold me now And make things right Cause when you're with me here The sun comes out at night Making me forget We're sinking like a sunset
Let's not dwell on the negative, but instead let's focus on being together and making things right. When we're together, even in the darkest of times, it's like the sun comes out and all the problems disappear.

Sinking like a sunset Sinking like a sunset
Things are changing and it feels like we're sinking, but we'll get through it together.

That whole album was amazing. And three great singles off it too (even if only one of them was a bona fide radio hit).

Damn, what a memory for me! I’m American, my wife and I were in Quebec in the summer of 92, back when crossing the border was easy. I wrecked our car after I discovered the exit ramp I was taking was actually a hard curb. The whole front suspension was messed up. I’ve always been grateful to Tom DesBois, the service manager at the VW dealership at the time. He and his team hooked us up with a motel in the area and got our car back on the road in three days!
While we were at the hotel, we were watching Canadian music videos, and Sinking like Sunset came on. I’ve loved this song ever since, and discovered only later he was in Red Rider

Oh, the memories!

Tom Cochrane, my fellow Canadian. I have always loved his music

Best Tom Cochrane song ever in my opinion. Tommy going from low baritone voice to his classic “I aam not a rock and I can feel it now” voice. As a man in my 20s, I continue to love introducing my friends to this legend

An Absolutely Awesome gentleman, of GREAT Talent, is Mr Cochrane. He is one of our Nation's greatest Treasures.
I was privileged to have met him in person, way back in December of 2007. This was and always will be, for myself, an
unforgettable experience. Regardless of his international celebrity status, he took the time, to speak with myself, for
almost ten minutes. ❤❤❤❤ 100% ❤❤❤❤ Roland Singh, Canada 🇨🇦 October 20th., 2021
