CocoRosie began as a duo, with Sierra singing, playing the guitar, piano and harp, and Bianca singing and manipulating various children's toys, electronic and percussion instruments, as well as other exotic noisemakers. They subsequently added various backing musicians, usually a bassist, keyboardist, and beatboxer. They have been a very active touring group, playing across Europe, the United States, and elsewhere.
They have released seven full-length albums: La maison de mon rêve (2004), Noah's Ark (2005), The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn (2007), Grey Oceans (2010), Tales of a GrassWidow (2013), Heartache City (2015) and Put the Shine On (2020).
In 2003, Bianca was growing restless and decided it was time for a change. Leaving her apartment in Brooklyn to travel the world, she ended up at Sierra's apartment in Paris. Over the course of the next two months, the women spent nearly every waking hour in Sierra's bathroom, chosen as the most acoustic and isolated room in the apartment. Soon, they had completed both a hip-hop recording (never released) called "word to the crow" and their proper debut album La Maison de Mon Rêve.
Originally, La Maison de Mon Rêve was only intended to be distributed within a close circle of friends. However, by 2004 the lo-fi album had been released on independent label Touch and Go Records, who had obtained a copy of the CD and had uncharacteristically pursued signing the artists. Since the creation of their first album, the Casady sisters have been virtually inseparable.
Stylistically they may be assigned to the indie rock, psychedelic folk, folktronica genres, and are sometimes associated with the New Weird America movement. Sierra, who studied operatic vocal techniques, takes the lead vocals and also plays guitar, harp and flute. Bianca is a percussionist and also beatboxes. The group also uses various objects such as toys to construct their unique sound. Popular indie bands such as The xx name them as a major influence.
They were actively touring during most of 2004, playing across the U.S. and throughout Europe with artists such as TV on the Radio, Bright Eyes, Battles, Devendra Banhart, and Busdriver among others.

CocoRosie Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
One.
Oceans wept
Moutains slept
Sidewalks crumbled to ash
Your name remains
In children's lullabies
Two.
Pull me close
Dear I'm tremblin'
Hold me tight
I'm afraid ot the night
Blackness fills the room
Your love burns bright
Three.
Oh summer winds
Remind me of your kiss
Soft and warm
I never want to leave this
Four.
I never wanted to say goodbye
I'd throw myself to the sea
If God promised you're inside
We'd float to island paradise
And I'd become your bride
Five.
The countryside looks bare
Without you lying in her grass
The stream is dry
And the crickets silent
There's no music in the night
I'd become smoke
And hide in your cigarette pack
Seven.
To be a star
Tossing light
To sparkle in your eyes
I'd become an angel
And kiss this earth goodbye
Eight.
Destiny
Used to be
Just a word to me
But heaven sure was right
When they said Jesus left somethin' behind
Nine.
Every inch of this body
I'd plate in gold for you
Even though I ain't go no money
I'd do it just to keep you
Ten.
Your eyes appear
In every one of my dreams
They glitter and they gleam
Like the first time we meet
Eleven.
The chickens crowed
And I knowed your home
My spirit ran to greet you
Before my feet left the porch
The CocoRosie song "Haitian Love Songs" is a hauntingly beautiful piece of music that seems to evoke the essence and hardships of love. The song consists of eleven separate verses, each with its own distinct imagery and emotions. Many of the verses allude to the natural landscape of Haiti, from the oceans and mountains to the countryside and streams. The singer often laments the absence of their loved one, with the absence portrayed as a kind of emptiness or silence in the world around them. One of the most striking images in the song is that of the singer becoming smoke and hiding in their loved one's cigarette pack. This suggests a kind of desire for total immersion or unity with the other person, even to the point of sacrificing their own independence and agency.
Throughout the song, there is a pervasive sense of longing and vulnerability. The singer describes themselves trembling and afraid of the night, and appeals to their loved one to hold them tight. They also express a willingness to do anything for their beloved, whether it be becoming an angel or plating their body in gold. The tone of the song is one of melancholic reverence, as if the singer is not fully in control of their emotions but is instead swept away by the force of their love.
Overall, "Haitian Love Songs" is a deeply affecting song that resonates with the rawness and complexity of human emotions. The repeated imagery of natural elements, combined with the singer's sense of powerlessness, creates a atmosphere of intense longing and intimacy.
