Overall Meaning

The lyrics to CocoRosie's "Noah's Ark" paint a picturesque scene of a child expressing gratitude to God for a beautiful day and all the wonders of nature. The song further highlights the child's prayer for sweet dreams and for the grace to be good tomorrow. The song presents a beautiful reflection of innocent faith and hope of a child looking to the divine for guidance, protection, and blessings.

However, the second verse of the song takes a fascinating turn. Here, the song introduces Noah, who takes the singer away with him, together with all his animals. The reference to Noah's Ark has symbolic significance as well. Noah's Ark represents the biblical story of a catastrophic flood which wipes out the wicked from the earth, leaving Noah and his family as the sole survivors to start a new world. Therefore, the child's departure with Noah on the Ark could imply a metaphorical escape from the hardships and challenges of the current world.

Overall, CocoRosie's "Noah's Ark" is a beautiful song that offers a unique perspective of the child-like faith, hope and the power of prayers. It also presents a symbolic escape from the vicissitudes of life to a new world of possibilities.

I still listen to this in 2021. I used to listen to it with my children when they were little before bedtime 15 years ago, a kind of magical moment !! I hope they will remember it !!

they do... i am one of the children that grew up to this, and i love my mom for loving good music... i still remember my broken family screaming at one another, and my mom trying to comfort me and my sister by singing these songs to us.. the beauty of the music could almost just barely drown out the feeling of chaos and confusion. i will never forget this song, or the peace it brought to a life in pieces. I love you all!

this still sounds amazing after all the years. them being hated by a large part of the critic seems laughable - they were original as hell here.

I LOVE THIS! Love the girls, their voices, the song, the images, their clothes and hairdos, the way this song makes me happy and thankful too. And I am not the religious kinda guy. They shine. How can someone dislike all this?
