Frosty the Snowman
Cocteau Twins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul
With a corn cob pipe and a button nose
And eyes made out of coal

Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale, they say
He was made of snow, but the children know
That he came to life one day
There must have been some magic in that old silk hat they found
For when they placed it on his head, he began to dance around

Frosty the snowman was as live as he could be
And the children say he could laugh and play
Just the same as you and me

Frosty the snowman knew the sun was hot that day
So he said 'Let's run and have some fun, now
Before I melt away.'

Down to the village with a broom stick in his hand
Running here and there all around the square
Saying, 'Catch me if you can!'

He led them down the streets of town right to the traffic stop
He only paused a moment when he heard them holler 'Stop!'

Frosty the snowman had to hurry on his way
But he waved goodbye saying, 'Don't you cry
I'll be back again, someday.'

Frosty the snowman was as live as he could be
And the children say he could laugh and play
Just the same as you and me

Frosty the snowman knew the sun was hot that day

So he said 'Let's run and have some fun, now
Before I melt away.'

Overall Meaning

The popular wintertime melody "Frosty the Snowman" is a stirring showcase that tells the story of a magical snowman that comes to life. The first verse establishes the character of the song's protagonist, Frosty the snowman, as a cheerful and happy soul. The chorus is where the story truly begins, with the song providing a backstory on how Frosty came to life through the enchantment of his silk hat. The next stanza describes Frosty's childlike nature and his ability to laugh and play, not any different from any human child.

The third verse underscores the central plot of the song. Because the snowman is constructed of ice, the heat of the day represents the primary impediment to Frosty's survival. To offset his impending doom, he entices the children who made him to a vibrant, music-filled place with his idealism and invites them to follow him there to play. Though he eventually succumbs to the warm weather, Frosty assures everyone that he will return the following winter, ending the song.

I’m a Goth and I love Christmas it’s my favorite holiday. Good to find some ethereal wave Christmas songs.

Davi Mag20

Noob question (and considering that this is Cocteau Twins): Is this Ethereal wave or Dream pop?

It's like they really wrote that song. It fits so well to their style. Arrangements are superb. As usual.

Wesley Williams

I agree: if I'd never heard the song previously, I'd never be convinced that Cocteau Twins didn't create it.

Tim Trierweiler

Couldn't agree more.

THIS IS THE BEST VERSION OF FROSTY THE SNOWMAN EVER! IT'S PRETTY MUCH THE ONLY VERSION I LIKE, AND I LOVE IT. IT'S SO STRANGE THAT THE TOPIC OF DEATH WOULD BE PRESENTED IN SUCH A PLEASANT MANNER FOR LITTLE CHILDREN. IT ACTUALLY MAKES ME EXTREMELY SAD, BUT IN A POSITIVE SPIRITUAL WAY
