Frosty the Snowman
Cocteau Twins (Holiday) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul
With a corn cob pipe and a button nose
And eyes made out of coal

Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale, they say
He was made of snow, but the children know
That he came to life one day
There must have been some magic in that old silk hat they found
For when they placed it on his head, he began to dance around

Frosty the snowman was as live as he could be
And the children say he could laugh and play
Just the same as you and me

Frosty the snowman knew the sun was hot that day
So he said 'Let's run and have some fun, now
Before I melt away.'

Down to the village with a broom stick in his hand
Running here and there all around the square
Saying, 'Catch me if you can!'

He led them down the streets of town right to the traffic stop
He only paused a moment when he heard them holler 'Stop!'

Frosty the snowman had to hurry on his way
But he waved goodbye saying, 'Don't you cry
I'll be back again, someday.'

Frosty the snowman was as live as he could be
And the children say he could laugh and play
Just the same as you and me

Frosty the snowman knew the sun was hot that day

So he said 'Let's run and have some fun, now
Before I melt away.'

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Cocteau Twins' (Holiday) rendition of "Frosty the Snowman" are a whimsical reminder of the beloved character from childhood tales. The song describes Frosty, a snowman created by children, who magically comes to life through an old silk hat they found. Frosty is described as a lively, jolly soul who loves to have fun, just like any child would. The song narrates his adventures with the children in the village as they chase him around, playing.

However, the song's tone also has a melancholic note as Frosty is aware of his transient existence. The sun is hot, and he knew he would melt away, but he embraced his time with the children, making the most of it by running and having fun with them. He leads the children through the village and down the streets, playfully teasing them to catch him if they can. Finally, as he hurried on his way, he reassures them that he will come back again someday, leaving the children with a promise of good times to come.

Overall, the song's lyrics capture the spirit of childhood whimsy and innocence, reminding us to cherish the moments of fun and laughter before they slip away.

I’m a Goth and I love Christmas it’s my favorite holiday. Good to find some ethereal wave Christmas songs.

Davi Mag20

Noob question (and considering that this is Cocteau Twins): Is this Ethereal wave or Dream pop?

It's like they really wrote that song. It fits so well to their style. Arrangements are superb. As usual.

I agree: if I'd never heard the song previously, I'd never be convinced that Cocteau Twins didn't create it.

Tim Trierweiler

Couldn't agree more.

THIS IS THE BEST VERSION OF FROSTY THE SNOWMAN EVER! IT'S PRETTY MUCH THE ONLY VERSION I LIKE, AND I LOVE IT. IT'S SO STRANGE THAT THE TOPIC OF DEATH WOULD BE PRESENTED IN SUCH A PLEASANT MANNER FOR LITTLE CHILDREN. IT ACTUALLY MAKES ME EXTREMELY SAD, BUT IN A POSITIVE SPIRITUAL WAY
