Face to Face
Code Blue Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He’s making love while talking on the phone
To a woman he doesn’t know
And she can’t face him and say I love you
She’s acting so detached such unexpected cool

Did I say too much
Did I speak too soon
With all my education
Still the words don’t come
Am I getting old
Am I still too young
Want to have it now
Want to have it all

There will come a time
We will meet again
Face to face
Skin to skin

Said I’d never leave you
Left you there for dead
Said you never leave me
Your world and my world
They’re not the same world
Can’t see eye to eye

There will come a time
We will meet again
Face to face
Skin to skin
Face to face
Skin to skin
Heart to heart
Skin to skin

Heart to heart
Skin to skin

Overall Meaning

The first verse of the song “Face to Face” talks about a man who is making love to a woman over the phone, a woman he doesn't know. The woman he is actually in love with can't face him and say 'I love you' because she is acting so detached and cool. This verse depicts a modern-day phenomenon of people not being comfortable with face-to-face conversations about their feelings, resorting to technology instead. The overall theme of this song is about the longing to connect with someone on a deeper level, to have a real conversation rather than hiding behind phones and screens.

The second verse is about the singer second-guessing himself; did he say too much, did he speak too soon? Despite his education, he finds himself struggling with expressing himself properly. He ponders on whether he's too old or too young to have it all, to be where he wants to be in life. These lyrics showcase the anxiety and doubts that come with wanting more but not knowing how to get it.

The chorus is the real keystone of this song, mentioning a future time where the two people mentioned in the verses will meet again, face to face, skin to skin. The chorus is repeated several times throughout the song and adds a layer of hope which is missing from the first two verses. They will no longer be hiding behind screens, but engage in a genuine connection, heart to heart, skin to skin.

Saw this band in New Orleans at the Warehouse opening for Thin Lizzy. Bought the album and now have the CD. Would love to see a full concert posted here by the band. At the very least audio from their live shows would be great for people like me who saw the band and loved seeing them live.

@Ron Stoner Hey Ron - glad you like what you heard. I have a few things online under the name The Honorable DHC. Check itunes or CD Baby (?). I've put a new version of Code Blue together that sounds amazingly like the original and have started to play out (got a gig Sept. 30 at the Cinema Bar in LA if you're in the neighborhood).Had kind of a miracle break through with my singing and can honestly say I'm singing way better than I used to which is easy to say since my voice was pretty weak in the past. Anyway you'll hear more from us soon. FTGF>>>
