We Dance
Cody Fry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Fire, we gather 'round
I hear the sound of your voice in mine
As we say liar, this world's a liar
To contentment found
Just to vaporize right before your eyes (yeah)

Yeah, I wanna dance on the grave of the
Way we were before love came to save our souls
Now we are free
Do you wanna dance with me?
Yeah, I wanna stomp on the snakes that were
Takin' skin from our heels, now we don't run anymore
Now we dance
Do you wanna dance with me? (yeah, yeah)

Flames, let's burn it down
The smoke will clear and life will rise from the ground
Yeah, right here, we'll build our own
Upon a rock, even if we're alone
No, we're never alone

Yeah, I wanna dance on the grave of the
Way we were before love came to save our souls
Now we are free
Do you wanna dance with me?
Yeah, I wanna stomp on the snakes that were
Takin' skin from our heels, now we don't run anymore
Now we dance
Do you wanna dance with me? (yeah)

Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh (do you wanna dance with me?)
Oh-oh-oh-oh (oh, woah-oh)

Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh

Yeah, I wanna dance on the grave of the
Way we were before love came to save our souls
Hey, now we are free
Oh, do you wanna dance with me?
Yeah, I wanna stomp on the snakes that were
Takin' skin from our heels, but we don't run anymore

Yeah, now we dance
Do you wanna dance with me? (yeah, c'mon)

Overall Meaning

In Cody Fry's "We Dance," the lyrics speak of burning down the past and starting anew. The lyrics in the first verse can be interpreted as the singers finding a connection with the person they’re talking to, hearing their voice in their own. However, they also acknowledge the lies the world tells to keep us from contentment. The line “to vaporize right before your eyes” refers to the fleeting nature of trying to find happiness in contentment. The chorus speaks of dancing on the figurative graves of the snakes and old selves that held them back before love saved them. They're now free from those bonds and living a happier life with their partner.

In the second verse, the singer is asking for flames to burn down the past, to create space for a better future. The lyrics speak of building their own world on top of the ashes, even if they must do so alone. The repetition of “oh-oh-oh” in the song can be interpreted as a call-and-response for a dance partner, specifically someone who wants to join in on their newfound freedom and joy.
