Simpson began to record songs in his bedroom during the summer of 2009 on YouTube, performing Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours", "Cry Me a River" by Justin Timberlake, and his own songs, "One" and "Perfect". He was subsequently discovered on YouTube by Shawn Campbell, a Grammy-nominated record producer who has produced for Jay-Z and other artists and moved to the US in June 2010 to sign with Atlantic Records. His debut single, iYiYi (featuring. Flo Rida), was released in June 2010 and peaked in the top 20 in Australia and top 30 in New Zealand.
Simpson released two studio albums with Atlantic Records, Paradise (2012), and Surfers Paradise (2013), before departing the label due to creative differences in August 2014. His first independent release, 2015's Free, marked a shift from his teen pop music to a more acoustic rock singer/songwriter sound. In 2017 he formed a band called Cody Simpson and the Tide, and released the blues and surf-rock influenced EPs Wave One (2018) and Wave Two (2019) before splitting in 2019.
In 2019, Simpson returned to solo work, releasing the single Golden Thing on 18 October, a song he wrote about his then-girlfriend Miley Cyrus.
In December 2020, Simpson revealed on Instagram that he had qualified for the Australian Olympic trials in the 100m butterfly, but failed to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics after finishing in 8th place in the trails in Adelaide in June 2021. He is currently training to make the 2024 Paris Olympics.
On 25 January 2022, Simpson released his first single in more than two years, Nice To Meet You, the first single off his upcoming 4th studio album, due to be released in early 2022.

I know your heart has seen better times
I know our songs had better rhymes
Before today
Darling, I guess I made the wrong mistakes
I understand if you need your space
Please take your time
Baby It's not just you
You know it hurts me too
Watching you leave
With tears on you sleeve
Notice mine aren't exactly dry
Baby it's not just you
That's hurting
Its me too
Whoa, yeah, I'm sorry
I wasn't there to catch the fall
I didn't hear you when you've called
All of those nights
Please don't forget the good days with me
I can the make back the heart aching beat
When It gets dark and its hard to see
We'll turn on the lights
Before you go away you need to realize
Baby it's not just you, you know it hurts me too
Watching you leave with tears on your sleeve
Notice that mine aren't exactly dry
Baby its just you
That's hurting, it's me too
Whoa, oh yeah, it's me too
I'm not giving up,
You don't have to leave,
I am willing to beg 'til I break my knees,
I believe in us,
Don't give up on me,
Girl I know that you're hurting.
And I'm sorry for the pain,
I promise that I'll change,
Forgive me, forgive me.
Baby it's not just you.
You know it hurts me too.
Watching you leave,
With tears on your sleeve
Don't you notice that mine aren't exactly dry?
(not exactly dry, baby)
Baby, it's not just you.
You know it hurts me too.
We had it all
How could we fall,
Baby I thought we would never die.
Baby, it's not just you
That's hurting
It's me too
Baby, it's not just you
That's hurting
It's me too
Baby, it's not just you
Baby, it's not just you
Baby, it's not just you
It's me too
Cody Simpson's song "Not Just You" showcases the emotional turmoil that comes with the end of a relationship. The lyrics express an acknowledgment of mistakes made and a plea for forgiveness, while also recognizing that both parties feel the pain of the separation. Simpson starts off by recognizing that his partner's heart has seen better times and that their songs had better rhymes before the events that led to the breakup. He admits to making the wrong mistakes, but still wants to make things right before his partner leaves. He emphasizes the shared feelings of hurt that both he and his partner are experiencing, and he believes that they can work it out and recreate the love they once shared.
The chorus of the song repeats the idea that it’s not just Simpson's partner who’s hurting, but he is also in pain. He apologizes for not being there when his partner needed him and expresses his sorrow for not hearing her calls during the previous nights. He pleads with his partner, reminding her of the good times they shared and promising to make things right. Although Simpson acknowledges that his partner needs time and space, he wants her to realize that they both feel the same pain and that he’s not giving up on her.
Overall, "Not Just You" is a touching and emotional song about the struggle of a relationship that seems to be coming to an end. The lyrics represent the desperation that comes with trying to save a broken relationship and not wanting to lose the person that you love.
