Berceuse
Coeur de Pirate Lyrics

Songe après songe tu me manques

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Coeur de Pirate's song "Berceuse" depict the deep longing and regret of the singer for a lost love. The first stanza sets the scene with the singer dreaming of their loved one, and wishing to run towards them. However, the loved one no longer knows them, and is now only accompanied by one angel while the singer forgets their kisses. The following stanza talks about the pain of not being able to forget nor reunite with them, and all the tears and strikes given in vain. The singer remembers why they left, only for a moment, but it cannot bring them back.

The song touches on themes of lost love and longing, with a combination of both pain and regret. The melodies and harmonies in "Berceuse" match the mood and lyrics perfectly, evoking a melancholic feeling. The somber instrumentation further adds to the introspective and emotional impact of the song. The juxtaposition of "without suffering I laugh" and "without laughing I suffer" are powerful statements that capture the complexities of heartbreak and loss. The singer's admission that their "last breath" was taken by someone else signifies how deeply they feel the separation and how all-consuming it is. Overall, "Berceuse" is a hauntingly beautiful song that explores the depths of heartbreak.

English lyrics

Dream after dream I miss you
And pains do not disappear
And every day I dream
To run very slowly towards you
But you do not know me
After this time I've really lost
And one angel at your side while I miss your kisses

And unsmiling I laughed my regret remains in bed
And I suffer without laughing because it was my last breath

Time after time I calm . And my tears you 'll bring no
And time after time I give it will not let me
And he does not really know me and you, you do not look at time
Yet I seek why I leave you for a long time this evening

And unsmiling I laughed my regret remains in bed
And I suffer without laughing because it was my last breath

And unsmiling I laughed my regret remains in bed
And I suffer without laughing because it was my last breath

Dream after dream I miss you
And sorrows don't disappear
And day after day I imagine
Running very softly towards you
But you, you don't know me anymore
After this time, I've really lost you
And she settles at your side while I forget your kisses

And without suffering, I laugh; my regrets remain in his bed
And without laughing I suffer, because he got my last breath

Wrong after wrong, I sink
And my tears won't bring you back
And punch after punch that I throw, he won't let me go
And he does not really know me
And you, you're not looking for me right now
Yet I wonder why I left you, just for a moment that night

And without suffering, I laugh; my regrets remain in his bed
And without laughing I suffer, because he got my last breath

And without suffering, I laugh; my regrets remain in his bed
And without laughing I suffer, because he got my last breath.

Justifications :
The goal here is for English speaking people to understand the meaning, so in this translation, I didn't care about fitting with the melody, only about meaning. Keep that in mind.

Line 2 : "peines" means "sadness", but plural. So "sorrows" was chosen.
Line 3A : "Jour après jour" can be translated literally, without any loss, so it was. "Everyday" would translate to "tous les jours" or "chaque jour"
Line 3B : "songe" can mean "dream", but also "think", "imagine", and so on. In this case, the word play seemed to use "songe" two times but with a different meaning. The first time talking about nights (dreams), and then switching to day (day after day)
Line 4 : "doucement" means "softly" or "gently". In this case, it doesn't seem to be about the speed, so "gently" was chosen instead of "slowly".
Line 5A : "Mais toi, tu [...]", means "But you, you [...]". Left it there to stay as exact as possible.
Line 5B : "tu ne me connais plus" means "you don't know me anymore", and it's because "plus" was used instead of "pas". With "pas" instead, then it would mean "you don't know me".
Line 6 : "je t'ai vraiment perdu" translates to "I have really lost you". The "you" is the " 't" before "ai".
Line 7A : The word "range" in "Et elle se range à tes côtés" was mistakenly heard as "ange" which is french for "angel", which led to more misunderstandings.
Line 7B : The word "oublie" in "pendant que j'en oublie tes baisers" was wrongly translated as "miss", but it means "forget".

Line 8A : "souffrir" in "Et sans souffrir, j'en rie" was mistakenly heard as "sourire" which is french for "smile".
Line 8B : "les regrets restent dans mon lit". "son" was omitted here, so I added it back ("his" in English").
Line 9 : "Et sans rire je souffre" The word play in the chorus is to switch the verbs "rire" (to laugh) and "souffrir" (to suffer) between line 8 and 9, and this intention was lost in translation.
Line 9B : In "car il a eu mon dernier souffle", "il a eu" means "he got" or "he has gotten". "it was" would be "c'était".

Line 10A : "tort" is a hard word to translate. It means "something someone did wrong". So I chose "wrong" as a noun (like in : "I did you no wrong"). But it could also be translated to "fault" or "mistake".
Line 10B : I'm getting lazy, so let's just say there was a bunch of misunderstandings here. Also there was a missing word at the end.
Line 11A : "Coup après coup que je donne" The word "coup", which means "hit" (noun), was mistakenly translated to "time".
Also, in french, you can say "give a hit", as in hitting someone or something", so the literal translation would be : "Hit after hit, that I give", but it doesn't work, so workarounds had to be used. In this case, the author seemed to refer to metaphorical hits directed at the pain the guy caused her, or at the guy himself, so "punch" was chosen.
Line 12A : The coma was misplaced. "[...] know me and you, [...]" instead of "know me, and you [...]" makes it sound like the "know" is directed towards both "me" and "you", but it's not.
Line 12B : Getting lazy again. "you do not look at time" is meaningless even in English, and it's far from the real meaning.
Line 13A: "Pourtant je cherche pourquoi je t'ai laissé" was translated in present tense but it's in past tense.
Also, "seek" was translated literally from "cherche", but it was used as in "looking for a reason why she left him", and since "wonder" does the job perfectly as a replacement for "looking for the reason why", it was chosen. Also, the " 't" was ignored, and it refers to the guy she was with. The author meant that she left him, not just left.
Line 13B : "que pour un temps dans cette soirée". The "que" is used to put emphasis on the fact that she left him just for a moment, and yet he managed to hurt her during that time. The word "long" was added, but it's not there and it goes against the intention of the author.
Also, she is referring to a somewhat distant night in the past, so "that" was chosen instead of "this". And since the word "night" fits more with the night life during which young people spend time with their friends or at parties and such (and the story talks about a night spent with a guy and possibly other people), it was chosen instead of "evening", which seems to lose the vibe.

Line 14 and 15 : Same as 8 and 9.
Line 16 and 17 : Same as 8 and 9.

P.S. Don't ask me why I posted this gigantic analysis. I was bored and I like Coeur de Pirate and her songs.
