The Running Free
Coheed and Cambria Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All non-believers stand aside and fear
A new day's marching through the door
How could you ever think you'd make it here'
Did it bleed' Was it sore
Through the struggles you've endured'

You've come so far from innocence
Provided all the consequence
Only what does it matter now'

'Cause you're going home, you're running free
As only you would be if you never owed them anything
And now you've found your way out
In the trust you've seen your path on home
Spend your time well before you go, here in hell

Your living ends before the engineer
What was your motive in this fight'
(Did they play you for the weaker of them')
How could you ever think you'd make it here'
Was it greed that pushed your heart
Through the struggles you've endured'

You've come so far from innocence
Provided all the consequence
Only what does it matter now'

'Cause you're going home, you're running free
As only you would be if you never owed them anything
And now you've found your way out
In the trust you've seen your path on home
Spend your time well before you go, here in hell

(There's a hell in all of us)
Spend your time well before you go
(There's a hell in all of us)
You've lost, it's all your own

(There's a hell in all of us)
There are no secrets you can hide
(There's a hell in all of us)
From yourself, in your mind, leave the worst of all behind

'Cause you're going home, you're running free
As only you would be if you never owed them anything
And now you've found your way out
In the trust you've seen your path on home

'Cause you're going home, you're running free
As only you would be if you never owed them anything
And now you've found your way out

In the trust you've seen your path on home
Spend your time well before you go, here in hell

Overall Meaning

The song "The Running Free" by Coheed and Cambria is an upbeat rock anthem about breaking free from the constraints of society and being true to oneself. The first verse immediately sets the tone by addressing non-believers and telling them to stand aside and fear the new day that is about to begin. The lyrics then address the struggles that the singer has endured, asking if it bled and was sore, and questioning how he ever thought he would make it to this point. However, despite these struggles, the chorus emphasizes that he is finally going home and running free, being true to himself without owing anything to anyone else.

The second verse delves deeper into the struggles that the singer endured, asking what his motive was in the fight and questioning if he was played as the weaker one. However, the chorus brings the focus back to the fact that he has found his way out and is finally living the life he was meant to live. The bridge emphasizes that there is a "hell in all of us," but encourages the singer and the listener to leave the worst behind and spend their time wisely before they go. The final repetition of the chorus shows that this sense of freedom is something to be celebrated and cherished.

Overall, "The Running Free" is a song about breaking free from the constraints that society puts upon us and staying true to oneself. It acknowledges the struggles that we endure but emphasizes the importance of being true to ourselves and not owing anything to others. It is a song that encourages celebration of freedom and living life to the fullest.

8 years later and I'm still constantly playing Coheed and Cambria, they have been (and probably will always be) one of my all-time favorites.

+Junjii Takada Right? I even got my mother into them. :D

+Tyler Cunningham my mother got me into them, since I was a wee one. We've been following them since 2003, after hearing the second stage turbine blade. 17 now, not even a bit bored by them :D

This song got me through a dark place in my life. Ten years later, I'm still here and stronger than ever. Thank you.

I'm almost at the end of my second tour of Afghanistan. Both times that I've been over here, I haven't allowed myself to listen to this song until I started heading back to the States. The lyrics in the chorus perfectly capture the emotions of a soldier who is finally, FINALLY coming home. "You're going HOME! You're running FREE!"

I hope you made it home ❤️
