Never Getting Over You

I was a hopeful heart that you shattered apart
You want to say goodbye and disappear
Don't want to watch when I break down into tears
I won't try to make you stay
I won't even try to change your mind
Take a good look at the pain in my face before you walk away
I'm gonna give you what you wanted but my heart will never stop
Tell you that I'm fine even though I'm not
You're gonna know for the rest of your life this is true
I'm never getting over you, you
I'm never getting over you, you
I won't pretend that I won't find someone else
You'll be a closed book sitting there on the shelf
I'll never have to open it again
To know the pages of the words of what could have been
I know where you're gonna be, where you're always gonna be
Right in front of me
Take a good look at the pain in my face before you walk away
Memorize all the hurt in my eyes or what I say
I'm gonna give you what you wanted but my heart will never stop
Tell you that I'm fine even though I'm not
You're gonna know for the rest of your life this is true
I'm never getting over you, you
I'm never getting over you, you
I can't stop, look for me and you can't stop
Me from loving you
Take a good look at the pain in my face before you walk away
Memorize all the hurt in my eyes or what I say
I'm gonna give you what you wanted but my heart will never stop
Tell you that I'm fine even though I'm not
You're gonna know for the rest of your life this is true
I'm never getting over you, you
(Not over you, not over you, not over you)
I'm never getting over you, you
(Not over you, not over you, not over you)
I'm never getting over you
Not over you, not over you, not over you
Not over you, not over you, not over you
The lyrics of Colbie Caillat's song "Never Getting Over You" are about heartbreak and the pain caused by a failed relationship. The opening lines set the melancholic tone of the song, with the singer acknowledging that the instinct might be to want the end of a relationship to be easier than the start. However, this is not the case here, as the singer's heart was hopeful, only to be shattered apart by their lover. The lover is keen to leave and disappear, without witnessing the pain and tears that their leaving will cause. The singer recognizes that there is no point in trying to make the lover stay or change their mind, and instead accepts that they will be left alone, heartbroken.
The singer then delivers a poignant message to their lover to "take a good look" at their pain and hurt before they leave. They urge their lover to "memorize" the sadness they see in their eyes and what they say, as it reflects the depth of their love and pain. They acknowledge that they will try to give the lover what they want, but that their heart will never truly stop hurting. The song's protagonist makes a vow, an emotional declaration that their love will always be with them - despite the pain they feel. They accept that their relationship is over, that they will never get back together but they will never forget the love they had, and they will never get over the pain of losing that love.
