When the Darkness Comes
Colbie Caillat Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Underneath the echoes
Buried in the shadows
There you were

Drawn into your mystery
I was just beginning
To see your ghost
But you must know

I'll be here waiting
Hoping, praying that
This light will guide you home
When you're feeling lost I'll leave my love
Hidden in the sun
For when the darkness comes

Now the door is open
The world I knew is broken
There's no return
Now my heart is not scared
Just knowing that you're out there
Watching me

So believe I'll be here waiting
Hoping, praying that
This light will guide you home
When you're feeling lost I'll leave my love
Hidden in the sun
For when the darkness comes

For when the darkness comes (oh oh oh)

Be here waiting
Hoping, praying that
This light will guide you home
When you're feeling lost I'll leave my love
Hidden in the sun
For when the darkness comes

Hidden in the sun
For when the darkness comes

Overall Meaning

Colbie Caillat's song "When the Darkness Comes" is a reflective and contemplative piece about finding hope and comfort in the midst of darkness and uncertainty. The first stanza describes the experience of discovering someone's presence in the shadows, with the singer drawn into their mystery but still uncertain about who or what they represent. The second stanza shifts to a more open and vulnerable state, with the door of the singer's heart now open and their world broken apart. However, they are no longer afraid because they know that someone is watching over them.

The chorus serves as a reassuring message to this mysterious presence, with the singer pledging to be there for them when they need it. The light mentioned is both a physical and metaphorical symbol of guidance and hope that will lead them home. Even in moments of darkness and confusion, the singer promises to leave a bit of their love hidden in the sun, a metaphor for hope and positivity that will continue to shine even when things seem their bleakest.

The overall message of "When the Darkness Comes" is one of hope and resilience. It acknowledges the feelings of uncertainty and fear that can come with life's difficult moments. But it also offers a reminder that even in times of darkness, there is always a light to guide us home.

It's been nine months since I last saw my dog buttercup. She passed away in my arms when she got under the back tire of my dads truck. Oh how I cried listening to this. I felt like she has always been in the shadows or somewhere watching over me. And making sure that I get to see the happiness when I am lonely. This hits me really hard. I could just see her flying around making sure that I wasn't as lonely as I was when I lost her.

Such a beautiful song for such a beautiful movie. I love The Mortal Instruments series and I think the movie was on point. Sure, there were some flaws, but it is impossible to make a perfect movie based off a novel. We've seen it countless times with Twilight, The Hunger Games, etc. But somehow The City of Bones is a simply beautiful interpretation of an incredible and beloved series. The actors(××coughjamiecampbelbower××) was great, the music was beautiful, the action and cgi was superb. The only thing I am unhappy with is that they never made and will probably never make a second film off of this. In a nutshell, a lovely song for a lovely movie.
