Motherly Love
Colby Stead Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you even miss me?

I've been leaving town,

Hoping you might chase me.

I try to call, but you don't hear me,
So then you blame me for everything.

Still, you try to protect me -

Afraid the world and its ways might reject me.

Well, even though you are the one who made me,

You can't save me from everything.

You depend on me,

But have you even tried living without me?

Is that why deep down you hate me?

You're the one who let me do everything.

You're the one that told me

To you I am so dear.

So, why then can't you hold me?

Why are you not here?

Do you even miss me?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Colby Stead's song "Motherly Love" deal with the complexities of a mother-son relationship. The opening line, "Do you even miss me?" sets the tone for the song - the son is seeking validation and affection from his mother who he feels has been distant from him. He has been leaving town in the hopes that she will chase him and show him the love he desires. However, his attempts at communication are futile, and he is met with blame for everything.

Despite this, the mother tries to protect her son, afraid that he will be rejected by the world. The son recognizes that his mother is the one who made him, yet he feels that she cannot save him from everything, and he longs for her to show him the love and affection he craves. In the chorus, he asks why she is not there for him, why she cannot hold him or show him the love she promised him, questioning whether she even misses him.

The song is a poignant exploration of a troubled mother-son relationship, with the son seeking the affection he feels he has never received from his mother. It explores themes of abandonment, neglect, and missed opportunities for connection. Overall, "Motherly Love" is a resonant and moving portrayal of a relationship that is both deeply felt and fraught with complexity.

@Andrew Bates No problem! I do know most of the trivia regarding the "big bands". When it comes to smaller bands like these ones tho, that's where we younger metal heads need the help sometimes lol

@Sirzechs Azazel My apologies if you know this, but I'll assume you don't. The first track on that album "Flotsam and Jetsom" Is the band Jason Newstead formed before he joined "Metallica". I do however assume you know that "Kirk Hammet" was a founding member of "Exodus" before he joined "Metallica"...

@Andrew Bates Will do, thanks for the recommendations!
