American Dream
Cold Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pink suitcase
And a princess gown
A movie star in my home town
She said she came back home so she can breathe
She takes her pills
And sings her songs
With a broken delivery all night long
The life she had to live was tragedy

Daddy works for Jesus
Sister leads the Band
Bobby's out of rehab
And Lizzy's going in
Mothers medicated
Nothings what it seems
Suddenly she finds out the American dream

She woke up late in the afternoon
She smiled at me said I'm leaving soon
Why don’t you pack your things and come with me
She takes her pills
And sings her songs
With a broken delivery all night long
Screaming Hollywood was made for you and me

Daddy works for Jesus
Sister leads the Band
Bobby's out of rehab
And Lizzy's going in
Mothers medicated
Nothings what it seems
Suddenly you find out the American dream

Now the stars don’t shine in Hollywood
Now the stars don’t shine in Hollywood
Now the stars don’t shine in Hollywood

Daddy works for Jesus
Sister leads the band
Bobby's out of rehab
Lizzy's going in
Mother's medicated

Nothings what it seems
Suddenly you find out the American Dream

Overall Meaning

Cold's song "American Dream" is a powerful reflection on the pitfalls of chasing the so-called "American Dream" and the toll it can take on those who pursue it. The song follows the story of a young woman who returns home to her small town from Hollywood, where she has been trying to make it as a movie star. She takes pills to cope with the stress and sings all night long with a broken delivery, ultimately realizing that the life she had to live in pursuit of her dream was tragic.

The song's opening lines paint a vivid picture of the young woman's disillusionment with her dreams. She is clutching a pink suitcase and dressed in a princess gown, suggesting that she has been chasing a fairy tale instead of a realistic goal. She tells the singer that she came back home to breathe, implying that she had been suffocating under the pressure of her Hollywood aspirations. The lyrics continue to paint a picture of a family in crisis, with a father who works for Jesus, a sister who leads a band, a brother who has just left rehab, a sister who is going in, and a mother who is medicated. All of these characters seem to be struggling with their own personal demons, highlighting the often-ignored reality that the "American Dream" can only be achieved by a select few.

The song's title, "American Dream," is tinged with irony, as the lyrics expose the dark underbelly of the myth of upward mobility that's central to America's national ethos. The song suggests that the dream of success and financial stability is not only unattainable for many but also can result in mental strife, familial conflict, and loss of personal identity. Ultimately, the song argues that the American Dream is a mirage that can never be fulfilled, leaving behind shattered dreams, heartbreak, and disappointment.

Cold is amazing, and Scooter is such a great guy. Saw them live in 2008 or 2009 (bad memory for small details). He performed 2 sets, one with Killer and the Star, and again with Cold right afterward. After the show he stood out front of the club and just chatted with everyone like he was one of the bros. Very humble man, so glad I got to meet him.

Scooter Ward got past the suicidal thoughts, and the depressing life. He matured, and now he's making mature music. Get with him, or get lost! Cold is amazing, and this coming from a guy that is very particular about his music.

BluePuppy

I used to be pretty manic about Cold, and lost track of them after the last album. The new sound is not a sound I'm into, really, regardless of the subject matter. But I'm glad to see they are still around, they're talented guys ^_^ Some friends and I used to travel around to see them play. ♫♪ "those were the days..." ♪♫ Does anyone else remember the old cold forum?

Manuel J

That was actually REALLY good. I just wish you guys had the popularity you used to...you guys deserve it!

Bands and musicians evolve. Its not normal for them not to. I'm no famous musician, but I have been writing songs since I was a kid and full on songs on guitar since I was 15. I'm 21 now and its amazing how my feelings have changed in only six years. I'm not really angry or depressed any more. Its hard to write about feelings I no longer have.

POST-GRUNGE

Pure talent ❤💯

Yeah,he's still a good singer.I wasn't so sure at first but now that I've listened to a few Superfiction songs the new sound he's got is starting to grow on me.
