Good review, David! My own judgment is that the time of Coda is somewhere between the mountain ocarina and a typical Asian ocarina, in terms of "purity." I think it definitely has less "buzz" than the MOs had, but you're correct to point out that the sound of Coda does have a bit of texture. Playing Coda and MO back to back makes the difference very striking.
Another thing to mention is that the voicing is on the bottom, and it's fairly easy to use Fipple bend to get notes below C5. B and Bb are no sweat at all. Low A takes some practice.
I'm glad you took time to explain the chamber overlap. This may be confusing to the beginner but it's an extremely powerful feature when you've learned how to use it.

The little plane printed on the box is not just cosmetics, you can actually play it in a plane. I have a friend that played it on a flight to Florida, using the silencers of course.

I kind of wish they continued to make their old Mountain Ocarinas along with this. I never had a chance to grab one before they were discontinued. But this is an incredible instrument, and I'll have to try and pick one up someday

Great review! I had been on the fence about adding one of these to my collection of whistles and ocarinas but was really intrigued by it's possibilities. Am more comfortable with my abilities on whistle and recorder and think this would be an easy transition. Like you, I think this would be a great take along EDC for it's ruggedness and size. Thanks for your honest and complete assessment. Like the clip option but think I would add a short lanyard with a small snap clip to secure it to a strap, belt or 'D' ring while traveling about on foot.

Hey David, great review -- I met Karl quite a number of years ago at a homeschooling convention here in Massachusetts, and have one of his early wooden Mountain Ocarinas made with phenolic resin and red oak, as well as a couple of the newer plastic Mountain Ocarinas. I remember Karl talking about his ideas for a two-octave Ocarina many years ago, and am totally thrilled to reconnect with him and finally get my hands on "the dream ocarina"!

Thanks for the review. I've been playing the Mountain Ocarinas since 2002 or so and I own 4 of them. The Coda sounds very similar and addresses the limitations of those instruments. I'll be purchasing a Coda very soon!

And is definitely an ocarina. By an acoustic engineering perspective. Yes, this is undoubtedly an Ocarina since you don't have a overtone range reached by overblowing and that you have to use a secondary chamber. The fingering actually has nothing to do with ocarinas specifically. And this concept of using two chambers for the same finger positions is also found in a new model from China. Compact, looks great, great tone. I'm getting this later down the road xD.
And those silencers..... that is an awesome idea!

This is great! I'm really glad you covered this, because I wouldn't have known about it otherwise. I was too young to buy my own stuff when Mountain Ocarinas were a thing, but this is kind of better in some ways! Been a docjazz subscriber since way back. I followed Karl's Coda-creation journey on the forums for a thousand years... Eagerly awaiting the day the Coda would finally leap from Karl's brain into my hand... So when I saw they were finally for sale, I bought TWO, even though like most people I only have one mouth.

The Coda is a masterpiece of engineering and vision. I mean, when I realized the Coda had you finger two chambers at the same time, I was like, SHUT THE FRONT DOOR, then I was like, MAKE SURE THE BACK DOOR'S SHUT, TOO. The Coda is like nothing else out there.

There’s actually a method I use when practicing on an ocarina. I blow really soft and quietly, it makes the ocarina sound like a little quiet baby ocarina. It works suprisingly well.

Back then there were talks about a two-octave ocarina in their forum; it's nice to see that Karl's project has finally come into being

Thanks for posting a review about the Coda! I agree with the bit of a learning curve with the fingerings. I love taking mine backpacking, and more often than not, it's just thrown in my purse on the go. The silencers were a HUGE help when learning to play.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS!

Dude I was like 12 when I first saw this guy and this is such a trip that he's still here doing the same stuff. I even got myself an ocarina because of this guy playing his and his tutorial series made me really want one. I'm 24 now and still suck at my ocarina, but maybe I'll pick it back up and force myself to learn again

I'm still working on getting better on my CODA. The upper chamber is easier for me than the lower chamber. I love how I can play certain songs (like Zelda's lullaby) without having to drop those higher notes down an octave. And since it's an EDC, it's in its little pouch in my purse.👍🏻😉

This is a great review, David. I have the Coda and like it a lot, and appreciate the ingenuity that went into it, as you point out. I play recorders and sopilkas and other instruments but I'm new to the ocarina. I understand that it's expected that you have to learn to adjust breath pressure a cross the scale to get accurate pitch, to match A=440 for example, to play with others. Do you find that to get accurate pitch on the Coda the breath pressure is comparable to other ocarinas you play? I'm finding that at what feels like a normal pressure range for normal volume I'm a half-step flat across the entire instrument, while to get to A=440 it needs to be played quite loud. Maybe that's just the way it has to be. How do you find this in your experience with the Coda?

I've been thinking about getting one of these, and I was hoping that you'd do a review of it. (I'm intrigued by the silencers--it solves an important problem with practicing my ocarina--but I'm concerned that the sound makes it less fun to practice.)

The covering holes for the higher notes makes an instinctive sense for me, but I think that's from playing the clarinet. Once you hit the top note on the lower set of notes, you hit the octave key and start at the bottom again. So I mean, it seems reasonable to me.

Very nice review David. When I first got this Ocarina/Flute I struggled a little bit because I was used to my triple ocarina and the Mountain Inline Ocarinas. So I started keeping an on line journal over on the Coda EDC website forum per Karls encouragement to do so. It’s been fun and I hope helpful to people learning how to play this wonderful instrument. Then I thought this would be something I would love to see you do David. I don’t know if you would be interested or not but I think it would be cool.🙂🧐😎🙏👍

Thanks David. I have been a fan for years. My hands are arthritic now and I can't play the large ocarinas. I can still play my original 4 hole ocarinas and I am sure that I can play the Coda EDC flute.

It seems like it's very similar to the STL max range double English pendant.

Being plastic, it seems to have a similar tonality to a recorder, with added difficulty in transitioning between chambers.

Intonation seems good. Really interesting just wish it was more natural looking. On a side not after looking at the price I will definitely be getting one though, I think the silence feature is great, volume is the biggest reason why my ocarinas are my least used instrument. Always loved wind instruments but they're too loud for my household.

Very clever--the versatility and familiarity of a 12 hole system, but the range and octaves of a double pendant style. I came from flute, sax, and clarinet so I could never get the hang of 4-hole fingerings. This might be worth a look.

It appears that it "could" play in harmony, but that might require too much skewing of the chambers; thence, the finger holes, such that they wouldn't align. It's doable, but then you might need keys to maintain the fingering, at which point you have a very vulnerable part that's exposed, and knocks it out of "take anywhere safely".

Nice review, I want one. BTW - an ocarina is a vessel flute, so I don't see the point in distinguishing this as different.

All ocarinas are vessel flutes, but not all vessel flutes are Ocarinas. There have been some very strong opinions within the ocarina community about what constitutes as an ocarina (specifically when comparing to the original transverse shape/style), which is why Karl wanted to make that distinction.

The Coda is what got me interested in wind. (I am primarily a string player.) After 3 or 4 hours of research, I wound up buying a night by noble ocarina. (I legitimately didn't have the ocarina on my musical radar beforehand, whatsoever.)
I still intend to buy a Coda, but the alto C ocarina seemed a better place to start.
I have since received it and love it.
However, the silencer of the Coda seems a lovely feature, now that I have begun practice. 😂
I am very glad I began playing wind, and your channel is an absolute asset, David.

Question. I just bought my coat at EDC Ocarina today. Eventually even after clearing the moisture out by blowing or sucking, there’s got to be some kind of mild bacteria or odor How do you clean the inside thoroughly. To make it like new.

It’s plastic, so You can soak it in soapy dish water then rinse thoroughly, or even put it in the dishwasher! Then I would put it in an open, dry space to make sure it dries thoroughly.
