Cold Play Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The lights go out and I can't be saved
Tides that I tried to swim against
Have brought me down upon my knees
Oh I beg, I beg and plead, singing

Come out of the things unsaid
Shoot an apple off my head and a
Trouble that can't be named
A tiger's waiting to be tamed, singing

You are, you are

Confusion that never stops
The closing walls and the ticking clocks gonna
Come back and take you home
I could not stop, that you now know, singing

Come out upon my seas
Cursed missed opportunities am I
A part of the cure
Or am I part of the disease, singing

You are, you are
You are, you are
You are, you are

And nothing else compares
And nothing else compares
And nothing else compares

You are, you are

Home, home, where I wanted to go
Home, home, where I wanted to go

Home, home, where I wanted to go (You are)
Home, home, where I wanted to go (You are)

Overall Meaning

Clocks by Coldplay is a song that captures the complexity of human emotion and the circumstances that bring us to our knees. The lyrics start by describing a moment of darkness where there seems to be no way out, where the tides we struggled against eventually brought us down to our knees. We see the desperation of the singer begging and pleading, making a call to action to come out of the things that remain unsaid, to shoot an apple from his head as the tiger waits to be tamed.

The singer then moves to a place of contemplation about the meaning of his struggles, the confusion that never stops, and the closing walls and ticking clocks. He knows he is on a journey that will come back to take him home, which he can’t fight, and he admits he is uncertain about his role in the situation. The chorus that repeats throughout the song is a proclamation that the person he is addressing is the only constant thing in his life, the only person who matters. In the end, the singer longs for home, a place of rest and comfort, where he can finally find peace, and he trusts that the person he is addressing will take him there.

@kathamann9729

I was pulling into the driveway, not quite into the parking lot. I was blasting the piano of this. It was 0530.
3 respiratory therapists that i know and trust implicitly, and 2 coworkers from dietary who keep me fed- all jammed to this.
I then smiled, sans-mask-yet, and parked.
Saw those same RTs; saw my dietary peeps.
My friend in dietary bought me my lunch.
Crab stuffed fish. It. Was. Outstanding!
I said, "I want to hug you so much; I'm hugging you in my heart!"
She said, "Kathleen, it was the least I could do"
We're a team, at my hospital.
I felt special today.

@bekkamusik

I feel like that's what happened to me...I heard a friend playing the beginning piano part and I didn't know that I'd ever heard it before but it was so familiar I felt like I'd known it forever...an instant favorite ❤️
