Come on, oh my star is fading
And I swerve out of control
If I, if I'd only waited
I'd not be stuck here in this hole

Come here, oh my star is fading
And I swerve out of control
And I swear I waited and waited
I've got to get out of this hole

But time is on your side
It's on your side now
Not pushing you down and all around
It's no cause for concern

Come on, oh, my star is fading
And I see no chance of release
And I know I'm dead on the surface
But I am screaming underneath

And time is on your side
Is on your side, it's on your side now
Not pushing you down, and all around
Oh, it's no cause for concern

Stuck on the end of this ball and chain
And I'm on my way back down again
Stood on a bridge, tied to the noose
Sick to the stomach
You can say what you mean
But it won't change a thing
I'm sick of the secrets
Stood on the edge, tied to the noose

You came along and you cut me loose

You came along and you cut me loose
You came along and you cut me loose

Overall Meaning

The song Amsterdam by Coldplay is believed to be about the dangers of recklessness and impulsivity. The lyrics begin with the singer acknowledging that his "star is fading", meaning that his time in the spotlight is coming to an end. He swerves out of control, but regrets not waiting to avoid the hole he has found himself in. The hole refers to his current state of mind and his inability to find a way out of his troubles. He asks for help, but feels stuck.

As the song continues, the singer recognizes that time is on his side and that he shouldn't worry too much about his situation. However, he can't shake the feeling that he is not truly living and is only existing on the surface. He draws an analogy to being "stuck on the end of this ball and chain," signifying that he is trapped in his own thoughts and struggles. He's even stood on a bridge, ready to take his own life, but was saved by someone coming along to cut him loose.

The repetition of the line, "You came along and you cut me loose," conveys the concept of hope and finding a way out of one's troubles. The song's overall placement on the album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, indicates that it serves as a powerful catharsis for the other tracks that come before it.

@JiminsLips

This is not a song. It's an experience.

@Lauren_210

This is why I love bands like Coldplay, Pink Floyd, and Nightwish (them being my favorite band of all time). Their music are works of art and they are the masters of storytelling through music.

@@Lauren_210I personally disagree with putting Coldplay’s in the same bracket as Pink Floyd even though I like Coldplay music It’s a bit of a stretch to say most of their songs are works of art but I guess everyone musical taste is different.
