The Scientist

Tell you I'm sorry
You don't know how lovely you are
I had to find you
Tell you I need you
Tell you I set you apart
Tell me your secretsAnd ask me your questions
Oh, let's go back to the start
Running in circles, coming up tails
Heads on a science apart
Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh, take me back to the start
I was just guessing at numbers and figures
Pulling your puzzles apart
Questions of science, science and progress
Do not speak as loud as my heart
Tell me you love me
Come back and haunt me
Oh, and I rush to the start
Running in circles, chasing our tails
Coming back as we are
Nobody said it was easy
Oh, it's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be so hard
(Oh, ooh)
(Ah, ooh)
(Oh, ooh)
(Oh, ooh)
In the opening lines of "The Scientist," Coldplay's lead singer Chris Martin sings about apologizing to someone he may have wronged or upset. He acknowledges that this person is lovely, but he had to search for them and assert their importance by setting them apart. The song then delves into a back-and-forth conversation with this person where Martin wants them to reveal their secrets and ask him questions so they can return to the beginning of their relationship. In the chorus, he acknowledges that while nobody ever said love would be easy, it is still unfortunate that they are parting ways. He then expresses a desire to go back to the start of their relationship and its simplicity.
The second verse touches on how Martin feels his relationship with this person has been reduced to numbers, figures, and scientific analysis, but that his heart's desires and emotions are what matter most to him. He asks this person to express their love for him and even "come back to haunt" him so they can go back and restart their relationship. In the end, he repeats his desire to go back to the beginning, expressed through "oh, ooh" and "ah, ooh" to close the song.
