Viva La Vida

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning, I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
Now the old king is dead, long live the king
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you'd gone, there was never, never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh, who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Calvary choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh

Hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Calvary choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name

Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

Overall Meaning

Viva La Vida by Coldplay is a song that paints a picture of a once-powerful leader who has now fallen out of favor. The song opens with the line "I used to rule the world," which sets the tone for the rest of the piece. The first verse describes how the singer used to be in control and could command the seas to rise. But now they are alone, sweeping streets that were once theirs.

The second verse continues to describe the fall from grace, with the singer saying that they used to roll the dice and feel the fear in their enemy's eyes. The crowd used to sing their praises, but now the old king is dead, and a new one has taken their place. The bridge of the song adds a layer of religious imagery, with mentions of Jerusalem bells and Roman cavalry choirs singing. The singer is asking for help and guidance, perhaps hoping that these religious icons will show them the way.

The song ends with a repeat of the bridge and a final lament that Saint Peter will never call their name. This final line implies that the singer has perhaps not been living an honest life and won't be accepted into heaven. Overall, Viva La Vida is a song about power, the fall from power, and the struggle to find meaning and purpose in life.

Fun fact for people who don't know this, Viva la Vida is based on the French Revolution and King Louis's final speech. Louis was overthrown by his own people and sentenced to death. Before execution he tried to say his speech but the revolutionists didn't care and rushed his execution. This song seems to paint King Louis as regretful for being a bad King.
