It's not that hated (by fans at least). It's my personal favorite. Coldplay themselves don't like it for multiple reasons:
1. They were really rushed when producing it and scrapped several songs. I don't really get what the problem was because the 13 songs they kept are all pretty solid and 13 is a decent amount on one album. So it's not like they didn't have good material.
2. They don't think they did Speed of Sound justice when they did the studio recording because they were so rushed. It's still a great song and it still hit #2 worldwide. Guess they just have high standards.
3. Some critics criticized it for being too similar to their earlier material. But then some also criticized VLV and MX for changing the band's style. Just goes to show you can never please some people.
4. For some reason, Chris really, really hates Twisted Logic

I don't know what it is about Coldplay ... We all know, even they know themselves (humble and wise as they seem to be) that they're not virtuosos .... but the music they make is just so human, so relateable, It creates a feeling of love and community. People feel hope and are empowered by their music. And that makes them the best for me. Not to mention the variety of styles they have pulled off in their carrer.

Coldplay has an amazing body of work. This is one of my favorites. Chris Martin is such a talented singer/songwriter. Some of their best songs aren't hits. That's a pretty good indicator of a great band in my opinion.

I always liked Coldplay, but I’d only ever really listened to their hits and most popular songs. I never got into their back catalogue or listened to full albums until COVID started and I was quarantined at home. Even though it had my favorite of their songs on it (Fix You), I knew that reviews of X&Y weren’t particularly glowing, especially when compared to its 2 predecessors. But after going through all 8 of their albums, I realized X&Y was looking like it was my 2nd favorite, only to AROBTTH. And a main reason for that was this song.
It stood out to me more than any other "deep cut" off any of their albums. I actually remember welling up the first time I heard the song’s climax, capped off by Chris’ falsetto. Listening through their discography showed me how good Coldplay truly is at writing songs that musically rise, climax, and fall back to where it started, almost like a story. And I don’t think any of their songs, hit or not, display that style of writing better than A Message.

@Ryan Winter They were only able to realize about 60% of their ideas. Additionaly, the band members got really tired of each other and they came close to a break-up. Chris Martin got kicked out of the band for some weeks. As a result they spent less time with each other since the Viva La Vida era (and Brian Eno's ideas). But I think critics really hurt them, too. Chris Martin stated in retroperspective, that critics were right about the album being too long. Frankly I disagree
