Champion of the World
Coldplay Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I tried my best to be just like
The other boys in school
I tried my best to get it right
And died at every June
This mountainside is suicide
This dream will never work
Still the sign upon my headstone, write
"A champion of the world"

I tried my best to stay alight
Fly like a firework
I tried my best to taking flak
But my rocket ship reversed
No referee, don't stop the fight
Everyone can see I'm hurt
But I'll stand before conquistadors
'Til I'm champion of the world

(When I sail) and when I sail
I'm sailing west
(Though I might fail) knowing I might fail
But still I am hoping for the best
(In my dreams) and in my dreams
Onto my chest
She'll bring the colors and say
"I wandered the whole wide world
But baby, you're the best"

La, la, la, la, oh
Oh, oh, oh, ay
La, la, la, la

So I'm flying on my bicycle
Heading upwards from the Earth
I am jumping with no parachute
Out into the universe
I am E.T. on my bicycle
With this kid and I want more

I am riding on my rocket ship
And I'm champion of the world

Overall Meaning

In "Champion of the World," the singer remembers his struggle to fit in with his classmates during his youth. He tried to emulate the other boys but failed each time, leading him to believe that his dream of becoming a champion was impossible. However, he refused to give up and tried his best to persevere through challenges, hoping that he could one day become a champion of the world.

The second verse of the song provides more detail on the singer's journey towards becoming a champion. He tried to fly high like a firework but was met with criticism and negativity along the way. Despite the setbacks and the visible pain he suffered, the singer refused to give up and pushed through the challenges. The chorus repeats the idea of the singer's determination to become a champion of the world, no matter the cost.

Overall, the song is about perseverance and dedication to one's goals. It encourages listeners to keep going even when it seems like success is impossible. The musical arrangement is typically upbeat, with guitars and drums creating an energetic and motivational feeling.

I'm listening to coldplay since I was 11 years old, I'm 25 now. And I can assure you for real that their music made me a better person, seeing all the colours that everything has. I'm so grateful to have met them

@Jinjukei

Me as well, I started listen when I was 14, now I am 35. If there’s a band in my life, it is and always will be Coldplay.
