Death and All His Friends
Coldplay Lyrics
All winter we got carried away
Over on the rooftops, let's get married
All summer we just hurried
So come over, just be patient, and don't worry
So come over, just be patient, and don't worry
So come over, just be patient, and don't worry
And don't worry
Try
Try
Try
No, I don't want to battle from beginning to end
I don't want a cycle of recycled revenge
I don't want to follow Death and all of his friends
No, I don't want to battle from beginning to end
I don't want a cycle of recycled revenge
I don't want to follow Death and all of his friends
And, in the end, we lie awake, and we dream of making our escape
And, in the end, we lie awake, and we dream of making our escape

The song begins with Chris Martin singing softly to a piano accompaniment before morphing into an uplifting arrangement featuring drums, chiming guitars, and a choir recorded in an art gallery in Barcelona.
The "quiet half" of the song was originally a separate song altogether named "School". "School" was originally intended to be an introduction to another Coldplay song entitled "Rainy Day" that was later featured on the Prospekt's March EP.

While the band was working on the song, producer Brian Eno was the most obsessed with finishing it, even creating the line "I don't want a cycle of recycled revenge".
The song was recorded in several different places around the world such as Barcelona, London and New York City, taking several months for it to be finalized.
Chris Martin told MTV News: "Well, this is supposed to be the theme of the album, really. We're aware of all the bad stuff in life, you know - i.e. Death and all his friends - but that doesn't mean you should ever give in to it, you know? So we all sing that bit together really loudly, as kind of a message to ourselves: never giving up and never focusing on the bad stuff too much." (Source Death and All His Friends Songfacts).

People talk a lot of crap on Coldplay, but the odds that their favorite artist ever created something as incredible as that moment are EXTREMELY slim. I'm not sure The Beatles have a moment this good, or The Beach Boys, or The Kinks, or the entirety of prog, or shoegaze, or anybody else (Not even you, second Comfortably Numb solo. AND NOT EVEN YOU, FINAL MINUTE OF STARLESS BY KING CRIMSON), but I would recommend trying these:
-The closest relative to this Coldplay moment might be that one melody...you know that "If I had words" song from Babe, that Farmer Hogett sings to Babe? That was an actual pop song from the '70s, but the melody was taken from a piece by Saint Saens, Symphony No. 3, and if you search around in the comments you'll probably find a time stamp for it.
-Another great moment, and for me maybe THEE power punch of music, is the bridge from Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush, that bit after the 2nd chorus and before the 3rd. I don't get Running Up That Hill, sorry.
-The last 1-2 minutes of The Argus by Ween are great, the solo at the end is great, great song, one of the greatest songs.
-The guitar solo in the middle, which sounds like a theremin, of Turn Into by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, is amazing.
-Lorelei by Cocteau Twins is something else, man, just something else. It's got 3 melodic ideas and they're brilliant.
-The fright-metal band Between the Buried and Me make some really beautiful stuff when they want to. Mordecai, after the first 2 mins, is probably the best thing they've done.
-Saint Simon by The Shins has these la-la-la's around the chorus area that are really good.
-Le Disko by Shiny Toy Guns, despite being a pretty silly song, has a middle-8 where they lay down a truly great melody in the form of some ooh's and ah's.
-The solo halfway or so into Star Stealers by Mr. Gnome is good.
-For the Pixies, the second half of Alec Eiffel, the second half of All Over the World, the second half of Havalina (which is pretty much a ripoff of the end of God Only Knows, but I like it better) are great...I could keep going with the Pixies but I'll stop.
-The solo 1+ minute into The Tropics by Jeff the Brotherhood is really good.
-Welp, that's all the great music that's ever been made. I've listed it all.
