Following their successful releases in 2000, Coldplay and their record label Parlophone thought there was enough exposure of the album in the United Kingdom. Thus, the decision of releasing a fourth single would be for regions that had not been overdosed by the hit singles "Yellow" and "Trouble". They settled on "Don't Panic", which at the time was an audience favorite. The single was released in some European regions, and the United Kingdom only received a promo edition. The critical reception of the song was generally positive.

All that we've fought for
Homes, places we've grown
All of us are done for
And we live in a beautiful world
Yeah, we do
Yeah, we doWe live in a beautiful world
Bones sinking like stones
All that we've fought for
Homes, places we've grown
All of us are done for
And we live in a beautiful world
Yeah, we do
Yeah, we do
We live in a beautiful world
And we live in a beautiful world
Yeah, we do
Yeah, we do
We live in a beautiful world
Oh, all that I know
There's nothing here to run from
'Cause yeah
Everybody here has got somebody to lean on
Coldplay’s song “Don’t Panic” speaks to the fleeting nature of time and the impermanence of life. The opening lyrics, “Bones sinking like stones, all that we’ve fought for, homes, places we’ve grown, all of us are done for” speaks to the idea that no matter what we do or the lengths we go to protect our homes and places we’ve built, everything we have will eventually come to an end. It’s a reminder that our lives are brief and that everything we know can disappear in the blink of an eye. The repetition of these opening lines throughout the song emphasizes the inevitability of this fact and the futility of trying to fight it.
Yet, despite this bleak outlook, the chorus offers a sense of consolation. When Chris Martin sings “And we live in a beautiful world, yeah we do”, he’s acknowledging that, despite everything that could go wrong, there is still beauty to be found in the world around us. Even as everything crumbles, there are moments of joy and wonder that can bring meaning to our lives. Coldplay seems to be saying that even in the face of certain destruction, we should take time to appreciate the beauty in our lives.
The final lines of the song “all that I know, there’s nothing here to run from, ‘cause yeah, everybody here has got somebody to lean on” offers a final uplifting message. No matter what happens or what we lose, we can always find comfort and support from those around us. It’s a reminder that, even when things seem hopeless, there’s always a reason to keep going.

After 6 years I have just rediscovered this song for the first time.
I was about 7 and at that time I was getting into music, and me and my friends created a band. I wanted to make a song that we could play, an this melody just popped into my head. I knew it was already a song, but just didn’t know which, and up to now, I still remember walking up to my best friend and asking him by humming the melody to him. He immediately told me it was Dont panic.
I know it doesn’t seem like much but now when I just randomly clicked on this video all these memories just came flooding over me.
Now me and my friend live completely different live completely different lives, barely in touch and on completely different continents. So much time has passed, and it just gives me this feeling, not really sadness but like acceptance that time has passed and I’ll never get it back, but am forever grateful for it.
Nostalgia is a weird thing. I’m only 14 but I already feel so old. Please live life to the fullest to those of you who see this. Life is short, so enjoy it to the max.
Love from New York 🤍

This was the first song I chose to play at my brothers funeral. He was the one who introduced me to Coldplay and who I would think of when I listened to this album. Thank you for such a beautiful song in this beautiful, but terrifying and rough world. Love You All, everyone.

Definitely their best. I liked the next one a lot too when it came out, but as the years have marched on, this one stands out a little more.
