Moving to Mars
Coldplay Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somewhere up above the stars
The wreckage of a universe floats past
Somewhere up above my heart
A tiny little seed is sown
A government is overthrown
Who knows when we'll be coming home at last

And I heard it on the radio
That one day we'll be living in the stars
And I heard it on a tv show
That somewhere up above
And in my heart
They'll be tearing us apart
Maybe moving us to mars

We won't see the earth again
In these seconds just remain unchanged

Eight to nine, nine to ten
We are meeting for the first time
We might never meet again you and me
We are meeting for the first time
Can't you see
Seven, six, five, four, three
We are meeting for the first time
Singing this space symphony

They'll be tearing us apart moving us to mars

Past the satellites and stars
They'll be moving us to mars

Overall Meaning

The song "Moving to Mars" by Coldplay is characterized by its space-related imagery and themes. The opening lines of the song set the tone, describing the wreckage of a universe floating above the stars. The lyrics then transition to a more personal level, with the singer-songwriter reflecting on the idea of leaving earth and moving to Mars. The seed of this idea is planted in the singer's heart, and he juxtaposes it with a government being overthrown- perhaps to suggest that the urgent need to flee the earth is a result of political or social turmoil. The chorus of the song suggests that the move to Mars will come at a price- tearing people apart and isolating them from one another.

The verses of the song, with its countdown of numbers, give a sense of urgency and anticipation. The repetition of "We are meeting for the first time" suggests that the move to Mars is not just a physical move, but also a metaphorical one- a chance to start over or begin anew. The final lines of the song "They'll be tearing us apart moving us to mars" remind us that this move may not necessarily lead to a better future- rather, the grass may not always be greener on the other side, and escape may not be the answer to all our problems.

@Jonny_001

I think U.F.O and Hurts like Heaven are the best songs on the whole album
Not that I don't like the other songs, love them to but U.F.O and Hurts like Heaven give me such a special feeling and automatically put a big smile on my face.
And they are more special for me now because they showed me this beautiful masterpiece!!!

Moving to Mars should not be replaced by any song
Because it doesn't belong to any album and stands on his own it makes it all the more special to me
First time when I heard it was incredible
But when you get to 1:46......
That feeling is just indescribable!!!!
LOVE YOU COLDPLAY!!!
(A.k.a. Best band in the known galaxy)

@Knickerboxer

The fact that this song didn't make it on any album is beyond me. Masterpiece!! Wish theyd go back to sounding like this, but anything Chris Martin touches is gold.

@soleylindaegilsdottir6016

+Knickerboxer It's funny, it's like they intentionally don't put their best songs on their album but instead release them as a b-side :)

@manuelbm26

+Sóley Linda Egilsdóttir Yeah, I think they made their best songs to the real coldplayers, releasing them on b-sides.
