I'm almost certain Chris wrote this song about his Ex-Wife, Gwyneth Paltrow. In an article about their split, Gwyneth talks about how they learned that their love could coexist in a place with them not being involved romantically. It's a beautifully wrote article, and she articulates what happened between them extremely eloquently. Chris, I believe wrote this song as his form of catharsis. To me, it's a song about knowing that your relationship has ended for superficial reasons, rather than the love between two people dying. They're still just as in love as they first were, they just know that they've now grown apart so far that they can't come back together. It's heartbreaking but so beautiful in equal parts. Even more so if you've ever loved someone in this way, and broken up with someone in the same manner and for the same reasons. A hauntingly perfect depiction of what this feels like.

I once read that, to some people, music is the closest thing to a holy experience.
I believe I'm one of those people and no one brings me closer to that than Coldplay. It's ridiculous how much they change and experiment but stay exactly who they've always been. Their craft is so much more than music, you can see it, and feel it and taste it. Seeing them live was an experience that I still can't put into words and I'm beyond happy they're back.

I worked in a pawn shop when I first heard this song. Watched people from all walks of life walk in and out of mine. Every time I hear this song I think about the single mothers who were taking a loan out on their jewelry, men who were laid off pawning their tools, and older generations selling their wedding sets to buy their prescriptions... I think about their faces almost every day, and say an extra hail Mary for them at bed time. This song brings back a lot for me, sadness mostly for the people who were tied to it.
