Baby It's Tonite
Cole Jude Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Won't you pick up the phone,
Cause I know that you're home
Too many words have not been said
For us to be livin' alone
Now all of the fighting
All of the tears
They don't matter now
Another night falls
Dark and lonely
You're the only one that
I can turn to

[Chorus]
If I ever needed your arms to hold me,
Baby, it's tonight
If I ever needed your eyes to heal me,
Baby, it's tonight

So come hold me close
And show me that you still care
Let's take it to where it all began
And start again from there
Cause there's no way out
As far as I can tell

I'm walking in a world of strangers
You're the only one that really knows me

[Chorus: x2]

Baby, it's tonight
Oh won't you please,
Please pick up the phone

Don't leave me to face this world,
All alone

Take some time,
Oh yea, 'cause

Baby, it's tonight.
If I ever needed your eyes to heal me,
Baby, it's tonight.

[Chorus]

Baby, it's tonight.

Baby, it's tonight.
Baby, it's tonight.

Overall Meaning

In "Baby It's Tonite," Cole Jude is pleading with his former lover to reconcile and hold each other again. He's asking them to pick up the phone and come back to him because too many words have gone unsaid and they shouldn't be living alone. Cole further states that all the fighting and tears should not matter now that another dark and lonely night has fallen. The singer acknowledges that his former lover is the only one he can turn to at this point, and if he ever needed their arms to hold him, it's tonight.

Cole believes that starting from where they began is the only way to take it forward, and there's no way out as far as he can tell, and he's not familiar with the world of strangers, but his former lover knows him. He pleads again with them to pick up the phone and show him that they still care. The chorus repeats that if he ever needed their arms to hold him, it's tonight, and if he ever needed their eyes to heal him, it's tonight. The last line echoes the request for them to pick up the phone because when a loved one is needed, and words can't describe how much they are needed, actions should suffice to heal hearts.

The most under-rated guy ever on the radio. Movie star handsome, brilliant songwriting, great singing, I think he got written off as a "pop pretty boy" and didn't get the airplay deserved or the promo effort from his label.

CodeBleu724

The change was bubbling in 1990. Grunge was about to blow up. Jude Cole and Brent Bourgeois' solo album were released the same year. Back then it was considered dad music in today's terms.

Barry Barber

I agree. Jude and Michael Penn deserved more respect

Suzanne Musgrove

I agree.

I would have never got this close to hearing or the slide of his guitar ,if the fellow ( Jack) passed away. Never did I ..... Umm. You never know who you sitting next to.

I have 3 of his CD's and have playing them for 20+ years.  Will never understand why he was not a superstar.  Talent, voice one of the best.

Perry Hill

He put his heart and soul in backing the band Life house....they were quite popular for awhile

Will Ritter

Jude Cole had the misfortune to be putting out great 80s pop/rock in the early 1990s... the right music at exactly the wrong time.

Voces del Río Río Urbano

Probably he didn't like little kids like most modern super stars.
