Anything Goes
Cole Porter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Times have changed
And we've often rewound the clock
Since the Puritans got the shock
When they landed on Plymouth Rock
If today
Any shock they should try to stem
'Stead of landing on Plymouth Rock
Plymouth Rock would land on them

In olden days, a glimpse of stocking
Was looked on as something shocking
But now, God knows
Anything goes
Good authors, too, who once knew better words
Now only use four-letter words
Writing prose
Anything goes

If driving fast cars you like
If low bars you like
If old hymns you like
If bare limbs you like
If Mae West you like
Or me undressed you like
Why, nobody will oppose
When every night the set that's smart is
Intruding at nudist parties in studios
Anything goes

When the Missus Ned McLean (God bless her)
Can get Russian reds to "yes" her
Then I suppose
Anything goes
When Rockefeller still can hoard enough money to let Max Gordon
Produce his shows
Anything goes

The world has gone mad today
And good's bad today
And black's white today
And day's night today
And that gent today
You gave a cent today
Once had several chateaux
When folks who still can ride in jitneys
Find out Vanderbilts and Whitneys
Lack baby clothes
Anything goes

When Sam Goldwyn can with great conviction
Instruct Anna Sten in diction
Then Anna shows
Anything goes
When you hear that Lady Mendl standing up
Now does a handspring landing up on her toes
Anything goes

Just think of those shocks you've got
And those knocks you've got
And those blues you've got
From those news you've got
And those pains you've got
If any brains you've got
From those little radios
So Missus R., With all her trimmin's
Can broadcast a bed from Simmons

'Cause Franklin knows
Anything goes

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Cole Porter's song Anything Goes are a commentary on the changing social norms, especially in the early 20th century. Porter contrasts the strict rules and customs of the Puritans with the looseness and freedom of the modern era. The lyrics suggest that anything is acceptable today and that what was once considered taboo or scandalous is now commonplace.

The opening four lines describe the arrival of the Puritans on Plymouth Rock and how they were shocked by the new world they had encountered. If they were to arrive today, they would be even more shocked by how society has changed. The chorus "anything goes" reinforces the idea that there are no longer any fixed moral or cultural standards.

Porter's lyrics also highlight drastic changes in fashion and literature. The second verse describes how glimpses of stockings were once considered shocking, but now anything goes. Similarly, the lyrics note that even respected authors are now using four-letter words.

The rest of the song goes on to describe how practically anything is permissible today, including fast cars, low bars, nudity, and scandalous behavior in high society. The lyrics take a satirical and often humorous tone, pointing out the absurdity of modern life.

Times have changed,
And we've often rewound the clock,
Since the Puritans got a shock,
When they landed on Plymouth Rock.
If today,
Any shock they should try to stem,
'Stead of landing on Plymouth Rock,
Plymouth Rock would land on them.

In olden days a glimpse of stocking
Was looked on as something shocking,
But now, God knows,
Anything Goes.

Good authors too who once knew better words,
Now only use four letter words
Writing prose, Anything Goes.

The world has gone mad today
And good's bad today,
And black's white today,
And day's night today,
When most guys today
That women prize today
Are just silly gigolos
And though I'm not a great romancer
I know that I'm bound to answer
When you propose,
Anything goes

When grandmama whose age is eighty
In night clubs is getting matey with gigolo's,
Anything Goes.

When mothers pack and leave poor father
Because they decide they'd rather be tennis pros,
Anything Goes.

If driving fast cars you like,
If low bars you like,
If old hymns you like,
If bare limbs you like,
If Mae West you like
Or me undressed you like,
Why, nobody will oppose!
When every night,
The set that's smart
Is intruding in nudist parties in studios,
Anything Goes.

The world has gone mad today
And good's bad today,
And black's white today,
And day's night today,
When most guys today
That women prize today
Are just silly gigolos
And though I'm not a great romancer
I know that I'm bound to answer
When you propose,
Anything goes

If saying your prayers you like,
If green pears you like
If old chairs you like,
If back stairs you like,
If love affairs you like
With young bears you like,
Why nobody will oppose!

And though I'm not a great romancer
And though I'm not a great romancer
I know that I'm bound to answer
When you propose,
Anything goes...
Anything goes!

I imagine the man sitting, with a cigarette, at the piano and writing this. The recording here reflects that moment well I think. Such a great song and ahead of its time in its content. A wonderful gem of human history.

@NiCadHeliPilot

Thing I love about this song is a lot of the content still holds relevancy to this very day, some 89+ years later.
It's wild.

@jansenart0

Also, that flow is still fire.

@SC-mb9sk

I love listening to this on my pip boy radio.

The authors who "now only use four-letter words writing prose" was probably a reference to the authors D. H. Lawrence and Henry Miller. The former's "Lady Chatterley's Lover" and the latter's "Tropic of Capricorn" had both been published (and were denounced as obscene) by the time this song was written.

Temple of Doom......little did Cole Porter know!

@SB-yl1ng

This song has been made over my times no one comes close to Cole Porters original.

@Mura_128

This rendition is as much an original as any stripped down studio demo version of a song is. the real original version is as sung by Ethel Merman, the actress who the song and character she starred as in the musical this song is from was quite literally written for her
