I've Got You Under My Skin
Cole Porter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've got you under my skin
I've got you deep in the heart of me
So deep in my heart that you're really a part of me
I've got you under my skin

I'd tried so not to give in
I said to myself this affair never will go so well
But why should I try to resist when baby I know so well
I've got you under my skin

I'd sacrifice anything come what might
For the sake of having you near
In spite of a warning voice that comes in the night
And repeats, repeats in my ear
Don't you know little fool
You never can win
Use your mentality, wake up to reality
But each time that I do just the thought of you
Makes me stop before I begin
'Cause I've got you under my skin

I would sacrifice anything come what might
For the sake of having you near
In spite of the warning voice that comes in the night
And repeats how it yells in my ear
Don't you know, little fool
You never can win
Why not use your mentality
Step up, wake up to reality
But each time I do just the thought of you
Makes me stop just before I begin

'Cause I've got you under my skin
Yes, I've got you under my skin

Overall Meaning

In Cole Porter's song "I've Got You Under My Skin," the singer is so deeply infatuated with their love interest that they feel as though they are a part of themselves. They have tried to resist this attraction, but ultimately they cannot help themselves, even though they know it may not end well. They would do anything to be near this person, ignoring the warning voice in their head that they cannot win. Despite their efforts to use their "mentality" and wake up to reality, the thought of their love interest is overpowering and stops them in their tracks. The song is a classic example of the power of love to consume a person to the point where they are willing to make sacrifices for the sake of their beloved.

Well, needless to say...simply, THE VOICE...

My Mom & Dad saw at the Hippdrome (or may the Alexandra) in Bimingham, England in the 1950's. The audience was small because of his involvement with Ava Gardner (and who can blame him). So small-minded prejudices deprived those people of hearing/seeing a STAR, more fool them.

I know my Mom & Dad loved it, as they often told me just how good he was. Im sort of jealous but happy.

It seems that no one but Cole Porter can sing Cole Porter. His vocal range is forbiddingly broad .Most singers fail miserably at trying.
