Some Of These Days
Coleman Hawkins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every honey bee fills with jealousy,
When they see you out with me.

Goodness knows
You're my honeysuckle rose

When you're passin' by flowers droop and sigh,
And I know the reason why.

Goodness knows
You're my honeysuckle rose

Don't buy sugar,
You just have to touch my cup.
You're my sugar.
It's sweeter when you stir it up.

When I'm taking sips from your tasty lips
Seems the honey fairly drips.

Goodness knows
You're my honeysuckle rose

Goodness knows
You're my honeysuckle rose

Don't buy sugar,
You just have to touch my cup.
You're my sugar.
It's sweeter when you stir it up.

When I'm taking sips from your tasty lips
Seems the honey fairly drips.

Goodness knows
You're my honeysuckle rose

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Coleman Hawkins's "Honeysuckle Rose" describe the beauty and allure of a lover, comparing them to the sweet nectar of a honeysuckle flower. The first lines establish the singer's confidence in their companion's attractiveness, claiming that even honey bees are envious of their presence. The following lines emphasize the singer's belief that their lover is the only one for them, using the metaphor of the honeysuckle rose to convey the idea of something rare and special. The next stanza describes the effect their lover has on the world around them; the singer claims that flowers wilt in their presence and that their appeal is undeniable. The chorus repeats the sentiment that their lover is "my honeysuckle rose," and describes the sweetness and satisfaction they bring to the singer's life.

This is the most outstanding take of "Some of these days". In 1977 I bougth another LP record to my Coleman Hawkins collection: "The Hawk in Holland" - and found this unbeatable solo by Hawkins' tenor sax. If you believe in a higher almighty power, I believe It reached out to Coleman Hawkins, not just that day, but on several occations both before and after...

Dit was inderdaad Annie de Reuver, die ons 1 januari in de gezegende leeftijd van 98 jaar ontvallen is. Het was voor de 17-jarige Rotterdamse haar eerste grammofoonopname. Zij zong, samen met Coleman Hawkins en de Ramblers, behalve dit "Some of these days" ook "I have only eyes for you". De opname is gemaakt in de Pulchri Studio aan het Lange Voorhout in Den Haag.
