The Man I Love
Coleman Hawkins Quartet Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Every night I dream a little dream,
And of course Prince Charming is the theme,
The he for me.
Although I realize as well as you
It is seldom that a dream comes true,
To me it's clear
That he'll appear.
Some day he'll come along,
The man I love
And he'll be big and strong,
The man I love
And when he comes my way
I'll do my best to make him stay.
He'll look at me and smile
I'll understand,
And in a little while,
He'll take my hand,
And though it seems absurd,
I know we both won't say a word
Maybe I shall meet him Sunday
Maybe Monday, maybe not,
Still I'm sure to meet him one day
Maybe Tuesday will be my good news day
He'll build a little home
Just meant for two,
From which I'll never roam,
Who would, would you?
And so all else above
I'm waiting for the man I love.
The song "The Man I Love" by the Coleman Hawkins Quartet is a classic jazz standard that speaks of a dream of love and the hope of finding that special someone. The first stanza sets the stage for what is to come, as the singer talks about how they dream of finding their "Prince Charming" every night, despite knowing the harsh reality that dreams seldom come true. But still, the singer holds out hope that their true love will come along someday, and when they do, they will be "big and strong" and everything the singer has ever wanted.
The second stanza continues the theme of hope, with the singer imagining a scenario where their perfect man comes along and takes their hand, without either of them needing to say a word. The song then takes a turn, as the singer acknowledges that they may not meet this man on Sunday, Monday, or even Tuesday, but they are sure that they will meet him one day. The final stanza envisions a future where the two of them build a loving home together, and the singer never has to leave, for the man she loves is all she needs.

When the mellow moon begins to beam,
At night when the moon is out, I start to dream
Every night I dream a little dream,
I dream every night, and in my dreams, my perfect man is there
And of course Prince Charming is the theme,
He's the perfect man I dream of, like a fairy tale prince
The he for me.
He's the man I'm meant to be with
Although I realize as well as you
I know it's unlikely to actually meet my perfect man
It is seldom that a dream comes true,
Dreams don't often become reality
To me it's clear
But I believe he will come
That he'll appear.
One day he'll show up
Some day he'll come along,
One day my perfect man will come my way
The man I love
The man I truly am in love with
And he'll be big and strong,
He'll be a strong, capable person who can take care of me
And when he comes my way
When I finally meet him
I'll do my best to make him stay.
I'll try my hardest to keep him around
He'll look at me and smile
He'll give me a warm smile
I'll understand,
I'll know he's the one just by looking into his eyes
And in a little while,
After a brief moment passes
He'll take my hand,
He'll reach out and hold my hand in his
And though it seems absurd,
Even though it might sound crazy
I know we both won't say a word
We won't have to speak, because our feelings will be understood
Maybe I shall meet him Sunday
Perhaps I'll meet him on a Sunday
Maybe Monday, maybe not,
Or maybe I'll meet him on a Monday, or maybe not at all
Still I'm sure to meet him one day
But I am confident that I will meet him eventually
Maybe Tuesday will be my good news day
Perhaps my lucky day will come on a Tuesday
He'll build a little home
He'll create a cozy space just for us
Just meant for two,
It will only be for the two of us
From which I'll never roam,
This home will be where I'll always belong
Who would, would you?
Why would anyone want to leave a place like that?
And so all else above
Above everything else in life
I'm waiting for the man I love.
I'm patiently waiting for my true love to find me.

One of the true Jazz classics; this recording is a must for any true Jazz or just general music collector.
I love the way Oscar Pettiford takes breaths as if he were playing a wind instrument.

right
@bambyparker9057
One of the most relentlessly swinging jazz performances from start to finish. Music doesn't get any better - and I love the way Pettiford uses breathing as a part of his solo!
@WestcoastTony49
This is such a great moment in jazz history. Heywood's intro solo is classic, Pettiford's short but sweet statement is perfect, and Hawk finds himself playing catch up before he even plays a single note-- and he sprints right up and catches the pack. Magnificent.

A classic masterpiece! All four are brilliant. Can you believe this took place over 70 years ago? Magnificent.

@danielweinstein5252
One of Shelly Manne's first important records, along with the epic contributions of Bean, Heywood and OP! This side by itself established Pettiford as the "new" jazz bass innovator.

One of the greatest tenor -solos in the history of jazz - and listen to the taking breath of Oscar Pettiford!!!
