They released an EP called Chartreuse in 1999, and gained a significant local following. That following paid off when they were signed to Cherry Records (a subsidiary of Universal Records). They made one major-label release: Dirty Wake, on February 15, 2000. The lead single from Dirty Wake, "Automatic", received nationwide airplay in the US and peaked on the Billboard Modern Rock charts at #28 in 2000.
In 2003, Mike Garrigan became a member of Athenaeum shortly before the band's 2004 breakup; after this he formed the group mg4.

From the way you see right through me
I think I know who you were
I think you said that you had feelings
Yet, nothing in this world ever stopped you
Nothing in this world ever brought you down to where I am
Yeah, it's always the same and you don't anyway
I think I know who you were
I think you said that I had problems
I think I know who you are
The way you turn green and get angry
Yet, nothing in this world ever stopped you
Nothing in this world ever brought you down to where I am
Yeah, and it's always the same and you don't anyway
And you won't anyway because you don't
But if I need a superhero I think I know just who I'll turn to
I'm here in case you're holding on
I'm here in case you're holding on
I'm here in case you're holding on
I'm here in case you're holding on
Nothing in this world ever stopped you
Nothing in this world ever brought you down to where I am
Nothing in this world ever stopped you
Nothing in this world ever brought you down to where I am
And I'm here in case you're holding on
I'm here in case you're holding on
I'm here in case you're holding on
I'm here in case you're holding on
In the song Superhero, Collapsis sings about an individual who appears to have a level of emotional detachment from others around them. The singer shares that they believe they know who this person is - someone who they feel can see right through them and has the ability to turn green and get angry. The singer suggests that this person doesn't care about their problems or what they go through, and nothing in the world ever seems to bring them down to where the singer is. Despite this, the singer implies that they would turn to this person if they needed a superhero.
The chorus repeats the idea that nothing in the world ever stops the person who the singer believes they know. However, in the final moments of the song, the singer offers themselves to this person - that they are there for them if they are holding on to something.
Overall, Superhero is a song about the complexities of human relationships and the ways in which we can often feel misunderstood. The singer appears to recognize the flaws in the individual they sing about, but despite this, they still feel drawn to them in some way.
