Slow
Collective Soul Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mornings like this
Make me feel like I never could float
Glimpses of peace
Portray all that you never could show

I'm not weakened by the fears
That you have applied
See I'm now learning in these walls
That you have supplied

Slow
Slow down boy
Slow down to control
Slow slow
Clothed in new costumes

That weather your newfound storms
Staring through reason
Content with your newfound decor

I passed the darkened vaults of

Late doorways as if I were a king.
Like this, I chain a whisper to my faults.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Collective Soul’s song, Slow, show the confusion and internal struggle of the singer in response to events in their life. The opening lines, “Mornings like this make me feel like I never could float,” depict the feelings of being stuck, weighed down by life’s burdens. It creates an image of someone who is struggling to maintain and finds it tough to uplift from the things that weigh them down. The “glimpses of peace” reveal the struggle of the singer to find a sense of tranquillity amidst chaos. The second stanza expresses that the fears implemented by someone in the past had not weakened the singer.

The chorus, “Slow down boy, slow down to control,” appears to urge the singer to take life slowly, to take the time to cherish their experience, and learn from it. The singer seems to be conscious of the need to regulate themselves but is struggling to do so in the wake of the newfound chaos. The “new costumes” and "newfound decor" perhaps reference the changes in the singer’s life and how they are still trying to adjust to them, navigate through them. In the final lines, “I passed the darkened vaults of late doorways as if I were a king. Like this, I chain a whisper to my faults,” the singer appears to be on the other side of their struggle, looking back and recognising the progress they've made. They have the luxury of time to reflect on past mistakes and make peace with them.

Slow was my word for 2020 in conjunction with this song. Boom. Covid reared it’s ugly head. Be careful what you wish for. I needed to slow down, but not covid slow.
