Anyone Else
Collin Raye Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby I bought wine and roses
On my way home
Yeah, I know we can't afford it
But life doesn't last too long
This world has gone crazy
And knocked us both to our knees
I'm fumbling for the words to try
And tell you I love you
For hanging onto me
When anyone else

Would've been long gone
Packed it up and headed back home
And not a soul would blame you
After what I put you through
Yeah, anyone else
Would've gone insane
Called the game on account of rain
Anyone else, anyone else, anyone else,
Anyone but you

Mayday, baby, all the rivets
Popped loose it's a total tailspin
Too much grindstone
Too little time with you, girl
You know it's wearing thin
Baby let's trade in these teardrops
For warm kisses on skin
You got a drawer full of IOU's
And it's high time
You called those things in
When anyone else
Would've been long gone

You've passed up so many chances
To walk right out the door
Instead of dodging
A champagne cork
And watching the wet clothes
Fall to the floor
When anyone else
Would've been long gone
Packed it up and headed back home

And you can hide behind
A Cheshire cat grin
But you know it's true
Yeah, anyone else
Would've gone insane
Called the game on account of rain
Anyone else, anyone else,

Anyone but you
Anyone else, girl, anyone but you

Overall Meaning

In Collin Raye's song "Anyone Else," the lyrics speak to the difficulties and challenges that come with a relationship. The first verse sees the singer purchasing wine and roses on his way home, knowing that he and his partner cannot afford it. This gesture is his way of expressing appreciation for his partner and the struggle they face together. In the second verse, it becomes apparent that the relationship is strained, with both parties struggling to keep it together. The singer acknowledges that the world can be a challenging and unpredictable place, and it's easy to feel like everything is falling apart. However, the singer recognizes that his partner is still there and hasn't given up on their relationship, and he's grateful for her resilience.

The chorus of the song speaks to how the singer recognizes that, in any other relationship, his partner might have left him already. The song recognizes the hardships that come with relationships and how it's easy for one or both parties to give up and walk away. However, the singer's partner stays, committing herself to the relationship despite the difficulties, even when anyone else would have quit.

In the final verse, the singer calls for a change, realizing the strain on the relationship has caused them to be distant from each other. He recognizes that it's not enough to be in a relationship and that it's important to make time for each other. The relationship has been on the brink of collapse, and they have to work at it to keep it together. Despite all the difficulties, the singer's partner has stayed with him, and he acknowledges and appreciates that.

Just this Saturday I was putting groceries away in my car and could hear this song playing. At first I thought it was from someone's car, but as I listened I could tell it was live. Imagine my shock when I discovered Collin was playing a live concert less than 1/2 mile from my house. I really wished I would have known because I would have gone, and it would have been the first concert I would have attended. This song was hitting the airwaves when I got into country in the 8th grade. I have been a fan ever since.

I would've been there in an instant! Omg I first saw collin raye in 2011 with my aunt he paid attention us more than anybody else in the front row because he was literally enjoying making me spazz out from happiness haha πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I even got to sing a bit of "love remains" with him 😁 afterwards I said "we love you!" And waved expecting merely a wave back. He walks to the front of the stage while I'm frozen and takes my hand planting a smooch on it. I managed to squeak out an "I love you" and "I've listened to you my whole life you just made my whole life" and he goes "awww" and as he's walking away he goes "I love you darlin!" And I nearly died haha I've loved that man for years so that was a meaningful experience I never thought I'd get to meet him but I did and hopefully you will too β™₯️β™₯️β™₯️

A great Radney Foster signature song. Saw Colin in Bay City MI in 2011 on his acoustic solo tour with an awesome piano player. Got to meet him backstage and get pics. Still has his amazing vocal quality. Very personable with the audience.
