Raye first attracted Nashville's attention as the lead vocalist on a string of independent singles in the 1980s. Billed as The Wrays, the act released a couple of singles on Mercury Records in the mid-80s before breaking up. Epic Records signed Raye as a solo act in 1990. A year later, the nostalgic ballad Love, Me hit No. 1, and by 2000, he charted 21 Top 10 hits for Epic. His first four studio albums, as well as his Greatest Hits, have been certified platinum. His best-known hits include Little Rock, about a recovering alcoholic, and I Think About You, about watching his teenage daughter grow up.
I'll Be Home for Christmas
Collin Raye Lyrics

Even more than I usually do
And although I know, it's a long road back
I promise you
I'll be home for Christmas
You can count on me
Please have snow and mistletoe
Christmas eve will find me
Where the love-light gleams
I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents on the tree
Christmas eve will find me
Where the love-light gleams
I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams
I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams
In Collin Raye's "I'll Be Home For Christmas," the lyrics capture the nostalgia and yearning for a place of warmth, love, and security during the Christmas season. Raye sings with a sense of longing for a place he loves even more than he typically does; a place he refers to as home. Although he acknowledges that it is a long and uncertain journey to get there, he promises his loved ones that he will return for Christmas. The lyrics suggest that the journey back home is not an easy one, but the love and the warmth that await him make it worthwhile.
The song taps into universal feelings of love and belonging, the longing to be with one's family and loved ones during the holiday season. The reference to the nostalgia of snow, mistletoe, presents, and love-light gleams create a powerful emotional pull, making the listener yearn for a homecoming too. In the final lines of the song, Raye encapsulates the message of the entire song with the simple phrase, "I'll be home for Christmas, if only in my dreams."
The song was written in 1943 by Kim Gannon, who also wrote "I'll Walk Alone" and "Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow." It was first recorded by Bing Crosby and became an instant hit, becoming a wartime anthem for soldiers overseas, separated from their families during the holidays. The song continues to be a popular Christmas classic, recorded by countless artists over the past several decades, including Elvis Presley, Michael Bublé, and Pentatonix.
