Sally
Comet Kid Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sally’s got a feeling and she don’t know why
She’s been telling lies and I’ve been listening to her stories every
Night and day,
I don’t know why I want to stay

I don’t know why
I wanna be the better man I don’t know why
I wanna be the bigger man I don’t know why
Competition is so fun

Sally she was waiting when I came home late
She was pretty angry, screaming words I hadn’t heard since I was young
And wild
I said I think I have to go

CHORUS:
Why... why you send the dogs on me?
Oh Sally, why you send the dogs on me?
I love you... why you send the dogs on me?
Oh Sally, why you send the dogs on me?

Johnny is a man you shouldn’t push around
He’s Sallys older brother, when he comes around it’s trouble
And he brings them two;
Mr. Butcher and Mr. Bleak

I don’t know why
I wanna be the better man I don’t know why
I wanna be the bigger man I don’t know why
Competition is so fun

I don’t know why I am so afraid of being good,
My mama told to me be the one you wanna meet when you are old, you’ve
Gotta listen to your body, your heart is never wrong,
Oh, listen to your body, your heart is always wrong

CHORUS

Sally’s got a question for me I don’t have the answer to,

I said I don’t do, I do,
But it doesn’t matter if it’s true

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Sally" by Comet Kid describe the complicated and confusing relationships between Sally, the singer, and Johnny, Sally's older brother. Sally is struggling with a feeling she can't understand and has been lying to the singer. He doesn't know why he wants to stay and be the better and bigger man. The competition with Sally and Johnny is fun for him. When the singer comes home late, Sally is waiting and angry, and he decides he should leave. But Sally sends the dogs after him, and he's confused about why she would do that when he loves her. Johnny is a dangerous man, and when he comes around with Mr. Butcher and Mr. Bleak, there is always trouble.

The chorus repeats the question of why Sally sent the dogs after him when he loves her. The last verse is about Sally asking the singer a question for which he has no answer. He says he doesn't do, but it doesn't matter if it's true. The song seems to be about the confusion and instability of relationships and the difficulty of understanding our own emotions and those of others.

I don’t care where you’re from. This makes anyone of any age remember the pain of being bullied. Makes any mom or dad cry thinking about what kind of things their kids have been going through and how helpless they feel.
