Gloria
Company/Gloria Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And there she goes
The last one on the boat
The last one going home
Heading for the sunset

The white stripes on the road
The pink pearls come and go
The darkness in my soul
To a place we haven't known yet

And I just want to hold your hand
Until we go
Dont leave me alone

The bubbles in my eyes
Keep me feeling blind
Stops me to unwind
I just want to let go

The snake upon the hill
Hits me with a chill
Makes me want to kill you

And I just want to hold your hand

Until we go
Dont leave me alone

Overall Meaning

These lyrics are from the song "Gloria" by Company/Gloria, and they're a depiction of a lonely and melancholic journey. The first few lines describe an individual who's the last one to leave a gathering or a party, and they're headed home alone as they watch the sun setting on the horizon. The next few lines create a vivid picture of a car journey with white stripes on the road indicating the path, and pink pearls coming and going may either refer to lights or shadows in the car. The third line talks about the darkness of the soul, seemingly indicating the individual's gloomy state of mind, as they travel to a destination that's unknown to them.

The chorus of the song, which repeats twice to emphasis, is where the individual reaches out for company, expressing their need for someone to hold their hand and not leave them alone as they face their inner demons. The next verse shows the individual struggling with their emotions as they describe the bubbles in their eyes keeping them feeling blind and stopping them from unwinding. The final line of the verse expresses the need to let go of whatever is troubling them, indicating that they're seeking catharsis.

The last verse is more enigmatic than the others, with the snake upon the hill hitting the individual with a chill, making them want to kill. It's unclear what this line refers to specifically. It could be a metaphor for a past trauma that's now been triggered, or it could be a reference to a specific person, but one thing is clear: the individual is in pain, and they need support.

This song always reminds me of my mother. She had a pretty hard life, 2 divorces one from an abusive alcoholic, raised 4 kids, and died at 42 of cancer. But on occasion this song would play on the radio and she'd forget her worries for just a moment and sing it like Laura Brangahan herself. My best memories was when I was in college and we went to 2 weddings within 2 years and we danced to this practically clearing that dance floor. I just remember her wide smile and how happy she was in the moment. After the 2nd wedding, she was gone by the following year, but before she went I played this for her in the hospital and tho she couldn't sing, she flashed that signature smile. This song will forever and always be her song to me.

What a beautiful story! Thank you for sharing. My mother has passed too. These memories are worth more than pure gold, I do know :)
