Try To Remember
Company & Jerry Orbach Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Try to remember the kind of September,
When life was slow and oh so mellow.
Try to remember the kind of September,
When grass was green and grain was yellow.

Try to remember the kind of September,
When you were a tender and callow fellow.
Try to remember, and if you remember,
Then follow (follow) follow (follow) follow

Try to remember when life was so tender,
That no one wept except the willow,
Try to remember when life was so tender,
That dreams were kept beside your pillow.

Try to remember when life was so tender,
That love was an ember about to billow,
Try to remember, and if you remember,
Then follow (follow) follow

(Follow, deep in December it's nice to remember,
Although you know the snow will follow.
Deep in December it's nice to remember,
Without a hurt the heart is hollow.)

Deep in December it's nice to remember,
The fire of September that made us mellow.

Deep in December our heart's should remember,
And follow (follow) follow (follow) follow

Overall Meaning

The song "Try To Remember" by Company & Jerry Orbach is a nostalgic ballad about reminiscing on the past and longing for a simpler time. The song invites listeners to remember the beauty of September when the pace of life was slow, the grass was green, and the grain was yellow. Through the nostalgic lens of memory, September is portrayed as a time when life was tender, dreams were kept close, and love was just beginning to ignite.

The lyrics evoke a sense of longing and wistfulness, as the singer urges the listener to "try to remember" and "follow" the memories of their past. The reference to the willow weeping is a poetic device used to emphasize the rareness of tears during the time of tenderness and innocence being remembered. The song ends with the repetition of the word "follow," encouraging listeners to hold onto the memory of the past and allow it to guide them in the present.

Overall, "Try To Remember" is a beautifully written and performed song that captures the universal themes of nostalgia, longing, and the passing of time.

Hard to believe that Jerry Orbach left us back in 2004, now a long time ago. Missing you, Jerry, you were an amazing talent and seemed like a genuinely decent man too. RIP.

I read that he left love notes for his wife every day.

Jerry could do it all--a wonderful singer, comic actor, dramatic actor--he was so very gifted. I "discovered" Jerry from my sister's recording of the Fantasticks when it was performed by our high school, and had a 37 year love affair with my talented late wife--who also adored Jerry and got to perform on TV with him. I can say I knew Jerry all my life one way or another.

Thanks for this. The song is beautiful. So’s Jerry. I remember seeing The Fantasticks in Greenwich Village in my youth. Such a simple and classic theatrical experience. And off-Broadway venues are so small and intimate.

The Last Mindbender

This an absolute masterpiece! My all time favorite version, it just echos memories of love & simplicity...

We need more Jerry Orbachs!

i never heard his singing until he was much older... (he was the candle in disney's Beauty and the Beast)
you can hear the promise of what years of training gave him.
some people get reedy, watered down, as they age.
but he did not. he just got more robust and richer.
it's sad that i only Really knew his voice towards the end of his life/career. i wish i would have been on the journey of his performance earlier on. thankfully there are ways of going back and listening now. what an age we live in where even when we've lost somebody of such scope and talent, we are still able to get to know and appreciate them.

Well said.

Nice observation. ❤️

I had to look up how old he was when he recorded this…and then found out that he was only 24 years old.
