Compay Segundo (November 18, 1907 – July 13, 2003), was a Cuban musician and songwriter.
Segundo was born Máximo Francisco Repilado Muñoz and brought up in the city of Santiago de Cuba. He became a songwriter and performer, well-known to fans of Cuban music. He was also the inventor of the armónico, a seven-stringed guitar-like instrument.
In his early years he played the guitar, the clarinet and the bongos. He also played the congas.
His curious stage name derives from the fact that he played second voice in a popular duet of the 1950s called Los Compadres (compadre, or compay for short, in Cuba means "baptism brother", but as a colloquialism is used also to designate a good friend).
However, international fame only came in 1997 with the release of the Buena Vista Social Club album, a hugely successful recording which won several Grammy awards. Compay Segundo appeared in the film of the same title, made subsequently by Wim Wenders.
His most famous composition is "Chan Chan", the opening track on the Buena Vista Social Club album, whose four opening chords are instantly recognizable all over the world. "Chan Chan" was recorded by Segundo himself various times as well as by countless other Latin artists.
At a fiesta he sang to Presidente Fidel Castro, who took his pulse and joked about his vitality despite his 90-plus years. "Who could have imagined that?" he asked when he found himself at the Vatican City, performing "Chan Chan" before Pope John Paul II. He explained his longevity simply: mutton consommé and a drink of rum.
He predicted that he would live to be 115, but died of kidney failure in Havana, twenty years short of his ambition, and three days before Celia Cruz.

Llego a Cueto, voy para Mayarí
De Alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Llego a Cueto, voy para Mayarí
El cariño que te tengo
No te lo puedo negar
Yo no lo puedo evitar
Cuando Juanica y Chan Chan
En el mar cernían arena
Como sacudía el jibe
A Chan Chan le daba pena
Limpia el camino de pajas
Que yo me quiero sentar
En aquél tronco que veo
Y así no puedo llegar
De alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Llego a Cueto, voy para Mayarí
De alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Llego a Cueto, voy para Mayarí
De alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Llego a Cueto, voy para Mayarí
De alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Llego a Cueto, voy para Mayarí
De alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Llego a Cueto, voy para Mayarí
De alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Llego a Cueto, voy para Mayarí
De alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Llego a Cueto, voy para Mayarí
The song "Chan Chan" has become one of the most popular and emblematic songs of Cuban music. The lyrics are rich in cultural and geographical references that reflect the rural and coastal life in Cuba. The song is about a man who is traveling to different villages in search of his love, who he affectionately calls Chan Chan. The lyrics seem simple, repeating the same verses over and over, but they convey a melancholic feeling of longing and nostalgia.
The first and the most repeated verses of the song describe the journey that the singer takes, from Alto Cedro to Marcané, passing by Cueto and Mayarí. These are real places located in the eastern region of Cuba, that the composer Compay Segundo (Francisco Repilado) knew well as he was born and raised in this region. The song makes several references to the sea and the sand, and how the singer feels a deep connection to these elements.
The chorus of the song talks about the love that the singer has for Chan Chan, and how he cannot deny it even if it embarrasses him. The line "Se me sale la babita" is a Cuban expression that means "I drool when I talk about her", conveying the idea of infatuation and passion. The verses that follow describe a scene where Juanica and Chan Chan are sifting sand on the beach, probably in search of gold or other precious materials. The singer watches Chan Chan from afar and feels sorry for him because he seems to be struggling with the sails of his boat. The song ends with a simple and beautiful verse, "Limpia el camino de pajas, que yo me quiero sentar" (Clean the path of straws, because I want to sit down), conveying the idea that after his long journey, the singer just wants to rest and be with his love.
