Electronic Fences
Computer Magic Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Keeping me inside
I never learn my lessons
They always make me tired
Staying up all night and
Thinking of just how
Awkward I've become
Electronic fences
Keeping me inside
I sometimes get restless
But usually it subsides
Do you think that someday
You'll come rescue me
I'll remember your face
Will you remember me
My feelings condense and
I just tend to lie
Always thinking 'bout you
Won't tell you 'couse I'm shy
Am I really too young
Or am I not your type
Stuck inside a prison
You're my entire life
Computer Magic's "Electronic Fences" speaks to feelings of isolation and the desire for human connection in a technologically-driven world. The metaphor of electronic fences refers to the barriers and limitations technology can impose and the isolation it can cause. Even though the singer feels trapped and restless within these virtual confines, they never seem to learn from their experiences and always end up feeling tired.
The second verse contains a sense of longing as the singer thinks about the person they desire to be with. They feel awkward and restless and can't help but think about this person, despite their shyness. The bridge asks if this person will ever come to rescue them and if they will remember each other. The final verse manifests the emotional frustration the singer is experiencing as they question whether they are too young or not the other person's type. They feel trapped in a prison, and this person is their entire life.
To the song's arrangements, we can hear a mix of new wave synths and dream-pop sensibilities in the production. The synths create a futuristic, technological feel that contrasts with the wistful lyrics, creating an interesting dynamic. The song's vintage feel also adds a level of familiarity to the piece, which makes it easy to listen to and equally engaging.
