I just had to finally make a comment about this song after more than 30 years ago when this song came out. I lost my boyfriend in a car accident and his name was Joey. This song came out the same week he passed away. He never knew I was pregnant but now I am the mother of his almost 31 year old daughter. She is beautiful and she looks so much like him. This song has always been close to my heart and for my daughter who never got to meet her dad Joey. RIP my love Joey ❤️

I will always agree Concrete Blonde was underrated. Johnette as a singer has always been criminally underrated. But this song was EVERYWHERE in late 1990 (early 1991) It should've have gone higher than #19 but over-produced pop music was all the rage at that time: INXS, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carrey, MC Hammer, Whitney Housten, George Michael, etc. - They were just a little ahead of their time. If they'd released it later in the 90's, when true BANDS were popular again, it would've been a Top Ten hit for sure.

My husband passed away from liver cirrhosis secondary to alcoholism on 2/8/21. I’m a recovering alcoholic, sober a little over 5 years. This was always one of my favorite songs. Now it has so much more personal, raw meaning. Such an accurate, haunting depiction of the disease of addiction.

I played this song at my girlfriends funeral. She died of a drug overdose; and I remember when it was my turn to go and speak I was just trying so hard not to cry; I had horrible stage fright and my voice kept wavering but I got up there. I began by telling everyone that despite her mistake, I refuse to let it define my opinion of her. She was a wonderful, caring and giving person who had been struggling with horrible anxiety and depression for 7 years of her life. I went on to tell everyone there a few stories about our time together; like the time she sold her drum set to pay for an operation for my dog, just as I was getting ready to put him down. Like the time she spent her savings so we could go visit my grandmother when she was dying of cancer... I protested against it, but she had told me there will always be more money, but if I don't go see my grandmother one last time I will regret it the rest of my life. If only I had known how little time I had left with her... anyways, then I talked about how this song is about a woman who is deeply in love with a man, and has to live with his addiction despite being constantly hurt by it. I said I blame the drug, never my girlfriend; that I loved her just as much as the day I met her, even if her habit tore me to pieces... though what I suffered is nothing compared to what she went through. I ended off by saying that when I got the news I was angry, sad and terrified beyond anything I had ever felt in my life.. but I'm not angry anymore, just heartbroken. I love you Maya, and always will. I will never meet a girl as beautiful both and the inside and outside ever again. I will remember you until the day I die... I will be 90 and forget how to use the toilet and brush my teeth before I forget you babe :'( <3

I realize this was posted 6 years ago but I’m sure all feelings are the same. I’m so sorry for the loss you and many others suffered but you point out something so deeply true and it’s how most people tend to think of drug abuse & only see some homeless criminal who mug people and are strung out junkies. Of course some are like that. But drugs misuse is so easy to happen when anyone is in a fragile state or “broken” from something. There are times in some lives that nothing can take the pain away from, nothing other than chemically altering your brain to turn the feelings off. Unfortunately a number of highly dangerous drugs are a perfect regimen for such things. It’s such a simple reality that I fail to grasp those who are unable to comprehend it and just see the “addict” stereotype.
I’ve been fighting cancer over a decade. I’ve had no choice but to use that escape route, but just a few times and when I realized how much it helped but also how much I fell in love with the euphoric escape NOTHING else could provide, I promised myself for many reasons, that I’d never go there again.
To maybe make just a single person comprehend it who doesn’t, AS I’m typing this and saying these words, I am physiologically starting to crave that very escape. I control it but those times of urge will last all my life as I will be sick the rest of my life.

I’m so very sorry for her loss and all she suffered that took her there.
I hope you’ve been able to move on(with her just tucked into that special corner of your heart).

As a recovering drunk with 13 years clean, this song gets to me on so many different levels. During my active addiction I was with guys also in active addiction and I know the pain they caused me and the pain that I caused them, over and over again. This song captures the sad desperation of being a drunk or addict so achingly and beautifully. Years ago, I was struggling with drinking and told my girlfriend how this song reminded me of our relationship, thinking that she would also sympathetically relate in and feel sorry for me. Instead, she did something better and more important. She got mad at me (which she rarely did) and said, do you think I'm some enabling pushover and that I will just keep going on like this with you? It helped wake me up and soon after I got help and have now been sober almost 11 years despite the pandemic and losing my mom to cancer. We're also still together and married. Emotions when you're in the the throes of addiction are out of control, have a life of their own. When you're crying while you're drunk, it's because you're destroying yourself and coming up with every reason why after the fact. When you're sober and crying, however, especially in early sobriety, it's because you're healing and getting better and stronger. As sad and sweet and tragic as a drunken cry may sometimes seem to be on the outside, it doesn't compare to the inner strength and confidence you get from being sober no matter what no matter what, whatever the circumstances. That's real beauty.

This song is an enigma to me. I had no connection to it (that I can remember) during the 90s. But I listen to it and watch the video and instantly know, 'Oh, yes... this is classic early 90s stuff' So my first instinct is to brush it off as nothing serious-- a cheesy period piece. And yet... I keep coming back to it. Her voice, the emotion the subtle dark drive of the rhythm. Obviously, it's being recommended for review 30 years later, which means other people see genius here. My mother always loved this song. She loved all music. This was one of the many random songs from any and all decades so would play as I grew up.
One year after she unexpectedly passed, listening to all these ‘favourites’ of hers that she would play while I was growing up .. now have meanings. Like she couldn’t tell me this life lesson at that time, because I was young. But music ( these strong familiar songs) made such a huge impression on me. And now, I understand all these stories and lessons, she wanted to teach me. You don’t need to understand the lessons, because they were for me. A year now later after she passed, I think. This song is about Marc Moreland (whom she loved) and his addiction to alcohol. Marc was the front man for Wall of Voodoo and they toured together. Even though this came out in 90 and was a hit by 91, I named my first son “Joey” after this song in 98. I was a die-hard Concrete Blonde fan and although they were an underground LA band who didn’t want fame, this catapulted them into Rock history. Johnette is the most underrated vocalist and bass player and talented writer, her voice is so good and so powerful. I bet she still has NO idea just how many lives she touched and brightened with this song, that was written without the lyrics first and last minute she wrote them out. They were in her head all along, but it was painful for her to put down & then, all of a sudden it was a hit and requested thousands of times. This song still haunts me…

I'll go on...I used to be Joey. I almost lost everything to drinking. My now wife, Julie, put up with so much of my shit but she always picked me up, dusted me off and forgave me. She would cry herself to sleep and tell me to please bring back the great man she had met. One morning, I woke up with half of my body in the front door of our home and my wife, son and toddler daughter staring down at me with a disappointment in their eyes that I had never scene. Crying and in a whisper, my wife said, "what do you think of these memories you are giving your kids?" It hit me, it hit me hard!!! I sobered up & cleaned up that day. It's been 9 years. I thank her & my kids for saving my life.

@Greg Exelby I love drugs of almost all kinds, but usually don't have a problem with them. I'm pretty high functioning.
The incredibly strong and addictive opioid U-47700, however, almost killed me multiple times from overdosing, and I would go on short binges of three days every couple months and spend the first day or so vomiting every few minutes because my tolerance dropped.

3-HO-PCP is where it's at. Alcohol isn't fun by yourself, I find. I like drinking a bit too much with friends on rare occasions, but it isn't life altering and doesn't feel amazing. I had alcoholism in my early 20s but that was because I suffered from crippling anxiety that I was self-medicating.

I discovered this incredible song/performance many years ago. My husband, Larry, was an alcoholic who was totally in denial. I used to listen to this song almost endlessly . . . .he was my Joey. Larry died of esophagus cancer, common cancer among heavy drinkers, July 30, 2018. We were married for almost 45 years. . . .still painful to listen to Johnette's great song.

This song just played on a show I am watching on Netflix called The Midnight Club. I remembered back to when I was younger, and how hearing this song for the first time just blew my mind. I had never heard a song address alcoholism before. It really helped me process my relationship with my dad. I could never put into words the anger and much later forgiveness that I felt as a kid as I watched my father struggle with this disease. Thank you Concrete Blonde.

Glad you did. This album has been part of my life for 30 years five or take. It’s so underrated but I’m glad radio didn’t ruin it by playing it over and over everyday. I just listened 10 times I think though but radio ruins every good song even though I could listen to it a million times it never gets old.

Had the time of my life opening for Concrete Blonde four dates on the west coast. The shows were sold out, it was fantastic. Had dinner with Johnette, she was hilarious, smart, just the coolest ever. Those are some of my favorite memories.
