Roxy
Concrete Blonde Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All the young dudes
Feather'd & possessed
A sparkling sequined mess,
So special
& so eloquent
Heavensent
What I meant to say is
Of all the sounds I hear
With my humble human ear none
Are as delicious
Or nutritious.
O roxy,
You're my maggie may
More beautiful tonight
Than you ever were back in the day
O roxy, your golden boys
Make a beautiful noise
After all these years
You still bring tears to my eyes.
Sweeter sounds
From space were never heard.
Or a perfect turn of word,
Like a whirlwind,
You blow in again
& all the songs
Have been in my head
& heart for o so long
It's like listening to a kiss.
Oh, you'll never know
How very much we missed you,
Dearest
O roxy,
You're my maggie may
More beautiful tonight
Than you ever were back in the day
O roxy, your golden boys
Make a beautiful noise

After all these years
You still bring tears to my eyes

Overall Meaning

The song "Roxy" by Concrete Blonde is a tribute to Roxy Music, a British band from the 1970s known for their glam rock and art rock music styles. In the lyrics, the singer expresses their admiration for the band's unique sound and style, describing them as "feather'd and possessed, a sparkling sequined mess." The singer even goes so far as to say that "sweeter sounds from space were never heard" than those created by Roxy Music. While the song is primarily about the band itself, the singer also references the song "Maggie May" by Rod Stewart, likening their love and nostalgia for Roxy Music to that of a fan for their favorite song.

The lyrics are filled with vivid and poetic language, describing Roxy Music as "so special and so eloquent" and their music as "delicious and nutritious." The refrain of "O Roxy, you're my Maggie May" is both a reference to Stewart's song and a way of saying that the band holds a special place in the singer's heart. Despite the passage of time, Roxy Music still holds a powerful emotional resonance for the singer, as evidenced by the line "after all these years, you still bring tears to my eyes."

"Roxy" is a heartfelt tribute to a beloved band, and the poetic language used in the lyrics emphasizes the emotional power that music can hold. The song's narrative of longing and nostalgia for a past musical era will resonate with any music lover who has ever felt a deep connection to a particular artist or band.

Harmonies like nowhere else. Love the softer tone in Johnette's singing, as much as when she calls for a cab. (A great rock voice, unmatched). There's the solid rhythm section and the magic guitar sounds. Nobody else like Concrete Blonde ever, and no-one will ever copy them.
