Stand Up
Coney Hatch Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You run your life, like a snake in the grass
With your 42nd wife
Do you know who you are
Your mouth moves fast but you never go far

Stand up, say what you want
Take the money and run
You've got the gun to your head
But you're busy having fun
You read like a book
A hero within cause you killed another crook

Stand up, say what you want
Now you sit in a crowd
And you woke from a dream
Cause the clock's too loud

Stand up, say what you want
Stand up, say what you want

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Coney Hatch's song Stand Up appear to be a call to action for the listener. The first stanza mentions someone who is living their life in a deceitful and manipulative manner, running their life "like a snake in the grass" and with "42nd wife". The second line of the stanza appears to be a sarcastic question, as if to say, "do you even know who you are?" The following line, "your mouth moves fast but you never go far" suggests that this person is all talk and no action.

The chorus urges the listener to "stand up", to speak their truth and take what they want in life. The line "you've got the gun to your head but you're busy having fun" is an interesting one, suggesting that the listener may be holding themselves back from their goals due to fear or self-doubt. The second stanza describes someone who is living in a dream and is suddenly jolted back to reality by the sound of a loud clock. This is again a call to action for the listener to take control of their life and not let it pass them by while they are lost in dreams or distractions.

Overall, the song's message is one of empowerment, encouraging the listener to take control of their life and go after what they want.

Just finding out about this. This is probably some of the most criminally underrated stuff ever. Really awesome heavy riffs and insanely catchy songs. Ever one of em.

This is still a kickass song. I love it. Still have my autographs and saw them again the same year opening for Judas Priest. Blew the roof offa the joint. Canucks like to rock out and I love my metal/hard rock. This band is just what Dr. Feelgood ordered.
