I Got You
Connie Smith & Nat Stuckey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't get no attention from the people on the street
But they don't even see us they just step right on our feet
Just two unnoticed people in this great big world are we
And when I think about it yes that's all we'll ever be

But I got you and you got me and if they look they can see that we don't care
'Cause honey I've got you and you've got me
And baby that's all we will ever need

Looking through the window of a fancy diamond store
Going window shopping for the things we can't afford
Well there's people all around us with their noses in the air

But I got you and you got me and if they look they can see that we don't care
'Cause I've got you and you've got me and baby that's all we will ever need

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Connie Smith and Nat Stuckey’s song “I Got You” are a poignant and heartfelt reflection on the underappreciated and often unremarked beauty of life’s simple pleasures. The song speaks to the experience of two people who do not receive any attention from the people on the street, who simply step over them as if they are invisible. They are just “two unnoticed people” in the great big world, and it seems that this is all they will ever be. Yet despite this anonymity, they are content because they have each other.

The sentiment conveyed in the song is one of quiet contentment and acceptance, of finding happiness in the things that others might overlook or take for granted. The couple takes pleasure in window shopping, even if they cannot afford the things they see. They are not bitter or resentful, but rather grateful for what they do have, which is each other. The chorus emphasizes this sentiment: “But I got you and you got me, and if they look they can see that we don't care / 'Cause honey I've got you and you've got me / And baby that's all we will ever need.”

Angry Duane

2 great voices, with Connie Smith showing real delicacy as back up in the first verse (singing in a bit higher registry than usual), then letting her strengths shine through for the rest of the song. Nat Stuckey is intriguing, blessed with a great tone, and dramatic expression at times, though he leans a bit much on the deep timbre. These two were a fine duo, always leaving you wanting more and backed by Nashville's best!

Karen Schilling
