Converge have enjoyed a relatively high level of recognition. According to AllMusic, they are "regarded as one of the most original and innovative bands to emerge from the punk underground." Their popularity rose with the release of Jane Doe, which was ranked as the best album of 2001 by Terrorizer and later as the 61st Best Metal Album of All Time by Rolling Stone. Subsequently, Converge moved from Equal Vision Records to the considerably larger label Epitaph Records and their records gradually became more elaborate and expensive to produce. Special releases have traditionally been handled by Deathwish Inc., established by Bannon in 1999. The band's ninth studio album, The Dusk in Us, was released in November 2017 through Deathwish and Epitaph.
Damages
Converge Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Of unlived dreams that were cast away
Hear the howls soaring in the wind
Don't let our end begin
My hatred grows as their tears fall
Shield innocence from hungry tombs
Keep damages from taking you
Don't let our end begin
My hatred grows as their tears fall
I'll do anything that I can do
To lock the window beasta are climbing through
My hatred grows as their tears fall
(Extinguish our own hells)
The lyrics to Converge's song Damages depict a sense of impending doom and the struggle to protect oneself and others from the destructive forces of the world. The opening line "shut your doors their storm is coming" paints a picture of an impending disaster that threatens to destroy everything in its path. The following lines "of unlived dreams that were cast away" suggest that the storm represents the destruction of hopes and aspirations that were never realized. The line "hear the howls soaring in the wind" reinforces the idea that something ominous is approaching.
The singer then expresses their desire to protect the innocent and shield them from the destructive forces. The line "shield innocence from hungry tombs" suggests that the singer views the world as a dangerous place that seeks to devour the innocent. The line "keep damages from taking you" underscores the idea that the world is capable of causing harm, and it is the singer's duty to prevent this from happening. The repetition of the line "my hatred grows as their tears fall" suggests that the singer is fueled by a sense of righteous anger and an unwavering determination to protect those they love.
The closing line "extinguish our own hells" suggests that the singer is aware that they too have their own demons to confront. The song can be interpreted as a call to action for listeners to confront their own demons and to protect themselves and others from the destructive forces of the world.
